Running: When voters cast their ballot for the Nov. 5 election, they will find six candidates vying to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow. While Democrat Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers are the candidates most voters are familiar with, there are also members of several other parties who want to win the seat. Here’s a look at the six candidates on the ballot. Visiting: JD Vance will be returning to Michigan and delivering remarks at the Elite Jet Center at Contact in Waterford on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. Asking for your input: With just two weeks to go until the 2024 presidential election, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris remain locked in a tight race with no clear winner polling ahead in the key battleground states. Rain forecast: What to expect toward end of the month |
It has been extremely dry across Michigan. We will have to see an overall rearrangement of the upper-air pattern to get into some frequent and meaningful rains. There is some hope on that change as we look a few weeks out. Generally our state has had much less rainfall than normal since late July. We had a very wet pattern across Michigan in the first two weeks of July and then the rain stopped falling with regularity. An update: A fire burning in a remote part of the Ottawa National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has spread from about 5 acres when it was first spotted by a pilot last Friday to at least 112 acres, U.S. Forest Service officials said late Sunday. Look up: Seeing the Northern Lights is an awesome experience, but make sure you don’t discount our late fall meteor showers. Early this week, one meteor shower is peaking and two others are on deck to hit their high points - and maybe even flash a few fireballs - in November. |

MDOT announces 2024 seasonal closing dates for several roadside parks |
The list: The Michigan Department of Transportation is reminding Michigan residents and visitors to the state that most roadside parks will be closing soon, but says some will remain open into late November. New blueway for kayakers: The Lower Grand River earned the water trail distinction from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources last month, meaning the entire river is now in an elite class of outdoor recreation. Shipwreck: The Alvin Buckingham now rests under eight feet of water in Lake Huron about 1.2 miles offshore between Ossineke and Black River in the NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It ran aground on a rocky reef on Oct. 19, 1870, after springing a leak. |

Dan Campbell has perfect response to Chris Christie’s ‘no class’ remarks |
Classic: Dan Campbell had a perfectly on-brand response to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie calling him classless after blowing out the Dallas Cowboys - “The only thing, the last time somebody called me classless, I was drinking wine out of the bottle,” Campbell said. “All right? So, no, it’s all good. I’m not worried about it.” In the NHL: The Detroit Red Wings knew when the schedule was released in June that their first five games would be treacherous, and it played out that way. Urgency, if not desperation, set in after only four games, following back-to-back losses to the New York Rangers. That’s why Saturday’s 5-2 victory at Nashville was “huge,” as Andrew Copp put it. Tell us: Saturday night in Ann Arbor is set to add another intense chapter to the storied Michigan-Michigan State rivalry. The Wolverines will host the Spartans at Michigan Stadium, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. What’s your prediction on how the game will go? |

The University of Michigan started as a 40-acre campus in the middle of Ann Arbor in 1837. It has ballooned during the last 187 years to more than 1,740 acres in the city alone, according to university and city statistics. Some of the land acquisitions were not harmonious. On the other hand, some residents enjoy Ann Arbor's unique combination. While we're in town: The Veridian at County Farm eco-friendly housing development in Ann Arbor will be featured on PBS next spring. Flint could sell most of a decommissioned park with ties to its auto-making history to secure a new battery materials plant in the future. |
