WAD 2021 : CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR A HEALTHY WORLD

Created by the UIA in 1985, World Architecture Day is celebrated annually on the first Monday of October in parallel with UN World Habitat Day. This year’s theme, “Clean environment for a healthy world” addresses housing, public spaces and global environmental issues in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and will hopefully contribute to the global conversation on the 2030 Development Agenda.

Join us on Monday, 4 October at 12:00 GMT (14:00 CEST) for a panel discussion with experts from around the world. With opening remarks by UIA President José Luis Cortés, the webinar’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Margaret Chan, founding Dean of Tsinghua University Vanke School of Public Health and Former Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO).  Martha Thorne, Dean of IE School of Architecture & Design in Spain will moderate the event.

UIA-HYP CUP 2021: LAUNCH 

The annual UIA-HYP Cup student competition, today in its 10th edition, addresses Architecture in Transformation, exploring tensions between architecture, cities and rural life in an increasingly interconnected world.

Each edition is chaired by an internationally renowned architect, who selects its specific focus. Rem Koolhaas has selected the 2021 topic, “Countryside Dilemmas: New Rural Planning”, which asks students to think deeply about rural development, its benefits and costs, which are thrown into high relief by the larger global challenges of preservation and growing migration crises.

INTERNATIONAL IDEAS COMPETITION: DESIGN OF AREA AROUND THEATRE A' 

On 20 September, the Municipality of Larissa in Greece launched an International Open Ideas Competition for the Design of the Surrounding Area of the Ancient Theatre A’ of Larissa. Architects, or multidisciplinary teams consisting of at least one architect, are invited to submit proposals for the conversion of an inactive ancient open-air theatre dating from the 3rd century BC into an active point of reference and identity for the modern city of Larissa.  The deadline for registration is 19 November 2021.

LOGO COMPETITION: 2022 UIA YEAR OF DESIGN FOR HEALTH

In July 2021, the UIA General Assembly declared 2022 the “UIA Year of Design for Health”, a commitment which encourages all UIA Member Sections to use evidence-based design to promote health in buildings and cities. Piloted by the UIA Public Health Group (PHG), the UIA will facilitate a series of initiatives, including webinars, an open-access digital hub, an international research agenda to facilitate designing for health.

The UIA launches the logo competition for "2022: UIA Year of Design for Health." The winning logo will be used for the branding and promotion of the UIA's year-long activities.

COTE D'IVOIRE: NEW PRESIDENT

Joseph Amon is the new President of the Order of Architects Côte d’Ivoire for the next three years. Member of the class of 1982 of Paris’ Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture (France), he has directed the architectural firm, PROJETUDE, since 1999. Member of the Order of Architects of Côte d'Ivoire since 1983, he has been in charge of various government positions at the public level dealing with infrastructure, architecture and habitat. He succeeds Abdoulaye Dieng in the position.

HONDURAS: NEW PRESIDENT

Julio Cesar Salgado Lagos, is the new President of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Honduras (CAH). Graduate in Architecture in 2011 from the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) and Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MIDEREC) of the Dominican Republic , he has served on the Honduran Electoral Committee of the College of Architects of Honduras since 2015.  He succeeds to the post Oscar Mencia.

JAPAN: PRESIDENT REELECTED

Masaharu Rokushika has been reelected to the presidency of Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) for a second term, 2021-2022. An architect at Nikon Sekkei, a Tokyo-based architecture firm, which is the second largest in Japan, Mr. Rokushika possesses over 40 years of experience in the field.

According to Mr. Rokushika, architecture serves humanity's future by producing urban  environments "where children can enjoy healthy growth”.

ITALY: NEW EU BAUHAUS CONFERENCE

As part of the Venice Biennale Architettura 2021, the Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, Conservators (CNAPPC) is hosting an international conference on 9 October on design and artificial intelligence, “New EU Bauhaus: High Quality Design vs. High Digit Design?” UIA President José Luis Cortés Delgado and Natalie Mossin, UIA Region I Vice President, will take part in the 4th Panel at 15:00 on the subject of the need for creativity, sustainability and social inclusion in high quality design.

RUSSIA: ZODCHESTVO 2021

The Union of Architects of Russia is preparing the XXIX International Festival of Architecture, "Zodchestvo 2021", the largest review of national achievements in the field of architectural and urban planning activities of cities and regions of Russia. The event "Truth" will be held from 1-3 October 2021 at Gostiny Dvor Exhibition Complex in Moscow.

REPUBLIC OF BELARUS: FESTIVAL

The Belarusian Union of Architects is holding the XIV National Festival of Architecture  1-16 October. The Festival spotlights the best work of Belarusian architects. The event will be held at the Republican House of Architects in Minsk. Architectural competitions will be held throughout the festival and the Honorary Architect of the Republic of Belarus Prize will be awarded.

HONG KONG: 65TH ANNIVERSARY

The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) will celebrate the Institute’s 65th anniversary with a series of events spanning over from October 2021 to November 2022. Under the theme “Architecture for People 人人建築”, HKIA will host activities including the HKIA Annual Award 2021 & Young Architect Award 2021 Prize Presentation Ceremony, Anniversary Exhibition, HKIA Annual Dinner and a 65th Anniversary Publication.

TURKEY: WAD 2021 CONFERENCE

The Chamber of Architects of Turkey (CAT) and the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (UCTEA) will celebrate “2021 World Architecture Day” with an international conference on Monday, 4 October at 18:00 (GMT+3). UIA Vice-President Natalie Mossin and Council Member Fani Vavili Tsinika will deliver online presentations. Council Member Ayşen Ciravoğlu will moderate the event.

AUSTRALIA: JOHN DAVIDSON (1926-2021)

John Davidson, former National President of the Australian Institute of Architects, passed away on 29 July 2021, at the age of 95. J. Davidson’s career at the UIA began in 1978 as Region IV Council member(1981-85), later Region IV Vice President (1985–87). Awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for “services to the architectural profession” in 1985 and the President’s Prize in 1993 for his outstanding contribution to architecture in Victoria, colleague Robert Caulfield recalled a “kind and softly spoken gentleman who … lived and breathed architecture.” The Union extends its condolences to J. Davidson’s family and colleagues.
