 UIA INTERNATIONAL FORUM 2022: 18-20 MAY 2022

The newest edition of the newsletter for the UIA 2022 UIA International Forum, “Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers”, has just come out. Organised by Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) and taking place from 18 to 20 May, the event will take place at the Gran Teatro Príncipe Pío in Madrid, Spain.

Sessions and other events are organised at the Gran Teatro Príncipe Pío, but can also be followed online through theForum website. The Forum will be recorded and available by streaming in three languages: English, French and Spanish.

FRANCE: ROUND TABLE

On 17 May at 18:30, the Institut Français and the International Commission of French Architects will present Locus Solus, a public housing project in Bordeaux, at the Institut Français d’Espagne. The event consists of a round table moderated by Marjan Hessamfar-Vérons, Vice-President of the National Council of the Order of French Architects (CNOA) in discussion with the EO Agency followed by a cocktail.

BALTIC COUNTRIES: EXHIBITION 

The exhibition "Holistic renovation of modernism housing" organised the Baltic Architects Unions Association (BAUA) and the Association of Architects of Latvia (LAA) will open on 16 May. It accompanies the online international conference on the  subject which took place on 11 April.

COPENHAGEN 2023: CALL FOR EVENTS

The UIA World Congress of ArchitectureSustainable Futures – leave no one behind’ which will take place in Copenhagen from 2 to 6 July 2023 has issued a call for proposals for off-site events and activities which will happen during the Congress. Side events should incorporate sustainability, inclusion and accessibility. The deadline for submissions is 15 January 2023

UIA REGIONS' CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE 2022 FORUM IN MADRID: WEBINAR

The UIA is organising a  webinar on 11 May, 13:00-15:00 Paris time on the subject of the contributions made to the UIA International Forum taking place in Madrid from 18 to 20 May on the theme of Affordable Housing Activation. Following a welcome by UIA President José Luis Cortés, the event will include statements by the five UIA Vice-Presidents, reflections on common approaches proposed by the regions and specific regional proposals and a discussion of key action-oriented proposals.

UIA YEAR OF DESIGN FOR HEALTH WEBINAR: HEALTH FACILITY DESIGN & PLANNING

The UIA live webinar on Healthy Cities and Public Spaces, organised by the UIA Public Health Group,took place on 25 April and is now available on YouTube. The next edition in the UIA webinar series for the UIA Year of Design for Health will address Health Facility Design and Planning and will take place on Monday, 20 June 2022 at 14:00 Paris time.

UIA INTERNATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY SYMBOL COMPETITION: RESULTS

The international jury for the International Accessibility Symbol Competition, organised in collaboration with Rehabilitation International (RI)met virtually on 11 April to examine 355 anonymous entries received from competitors worldwide. The winning entry (above), created by Ukrainian architect Maksym Holovko, is “easily recognisable, demonstrating originality of form while indicating an openness, simply and powerfully conveyed using basic shapes and principles”.

UIA 2030 AWARD: FINAL JURY MEETING

On 20 May, the Jury for the inaugural edition of the biennial UIA 2030 Award will select winners in each of the six categories of the Award from among the 43 finalists. The biennial award, organised jointly by the UIA and UN-Habitat, invited architects to submit entries for built projects in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An award ceremony will take place at the UN-Habitat World Urban Forum in Katowice, Poland in June 2022

MAURITIUS: NEW PRESIDENT 

Vineet Luckoo is the new President of the Mauritius Association of Architects (MAA) for the 2022-2024 term. Co-founder of Archikraft Limited with diplomas from Durban, South Africa’s University of KwaZulu Natal and the University of Northampton in the United Kingdom, he served as MAA Secretary for three years and is also a member of the UIA Education Commission. He succeeds Divesh Guttee in the position.

MALAYSIA: NEW PRESIDENT 

Sarly Adre bin Sarkum is the new President of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) for the 2022-2023 term. Educated at the Institut Teknologi Mara Shah Alam, the University of Liverpool and the Universiti Sains Malaysia, he founded a hybrid architectural design firm and served as Past President on the Malaysia Green Building Council and as PAM Deputy President (2017-2019). He succeeds Ezumi Harzani.

FRANCE: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The conference on the preservation, conservation, renovation and transformation of contemporary buildings, sites and neighbourhoods in the Mediterranean, organised by the French National Order of Architects (CNOA), the Mediterranean Union of Architects (UMAR) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Montpellier (ENSAM), will take place 23 to 24 June. HONG KONG: ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

A series of architectural exhibitions in celebration of 25th Anniversary of The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), will be staged in Beijing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong and New York from June to October this year with the theme “M3: Beyond Territories - Made. Make. Making”. The exhibition offers new visions for the region and beyond.

The Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de  Costa Rica (CACR) Biennial is coming up 25-28 May 2022. Held with the theme ARCHITECTURE + RESILIENCE = EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES, it will include conferences, panels, an exhibition, awards and other activities aimed at professionals, students and the public.

AUSTRALIA: GOLD MEDAL

The Australian Institute of Architects has announced its 2022 Gold Medallist, Sean Godsell. The jury noted the international recognition of Godsell's projects and praised his “architectural response in defining Australia’s unique territorial landscape” as “personal, rigorous and relevant.”

The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) has published a new study on the “economic benefits of regulation in architectural services”. The objective of the study is to provide a constructive contribution to the debate on the regulation of the profession.
