COPENHAGEN CONGRESS 

The organisers of the UIA World Congress of Architects taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark next year have launched calls for UIA Member Sections and Working Bodies wishing to host events. 

Stands measuring 9m2 are available at no cost with the deadline for this being 15 January 2023. Additional space and amenities (audiovisual equipment, furniture) will require payment. 

UIA Members Sections and Working Bodies can also contact the Congress organisers if they wish to book rooms for conferences or seminars. The content must be relevant to the theme “Sustainable Futures- Leave No One Behind” and the deadline for this is 31 December 2022. 

Proposals are invited for the organisation of side events that incorporate the Congress theme with the deadline for submission on the Congress website with the deadline being 1 March 2023.

INTERNATIONAL VELUX AWARDS 2022 - GLOBAL WINNERS 

The VELUX Group has announced the global winners for the 2022 Edition of the International VELUX Award for students of architecture. This biennial competition, endorsed by the UIA since 2004, invites participants to explore daylight in one of 2 categories: Daylight in Buildings and Daylight Investigations.

The jury selected the global winners from the 10 finalists selected in the first phase in July 2022. A total of 507 projects were submitted from 211 schools of architecture in 63 countries.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT BUILDING COMPETITION

The online exhibition for the 'Paul-Henri Spaak Building’, Brussels competition organised by the European Parliament has been launched. The physical exhibition will be held in Brussels in early 2023. The restricted international single stage design competition for  renewal of the European Parliament – Paul-Henri SPAAK Building Brussels sought a sustainable approach with a strong emphasis on "operability, maintainability, flexibility and adaptability”. 

The results were announced in July 2022and the first prize was awarded to JDS Architects (Denmark) with Coldefy (France), NL Architects (Netherlands), Carlo Ratti Associati (Italy), ENSAMBLE STUDIO (Spain), UTIL cvba (Belgium) and Ramboll (Denmark).

ITALY: ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL

The National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservationists' 2022 edition of the Architecture Festival in Rome will take place on 16 December 2022. Panelists will discuss the meaning of territorial preservation, the related ethical, social and regulatory implications, the importance of territorial organisations and the territorial preservation projects as well the role of architects and related professionals therein.

INDIA: EASTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE 

The Indian Institute of Architects is organising the Eastern Regional Conference 2022 on 17-18 December bringing together architects from around the world to discuss this year’s theme “Kshitij - The Rising Architectural Horizon”. The Conference structure will provide an opportunity to facilitate meaningful dialogue exchanges between local, national and international architects, conference delegates, technical partners and practitioners and relevant authorities.

FRANCE: EQUERRE D'ARGENT 

The Equerre d’Argent Award has been awarded to French Architectural firms Ivry Serres Architecture and Beaudouin Architects for their design of The Charles-Nègre Multimedia Library in Grasse, France.

The jury, chaired by Jacques Lucan Architect and former editor-in-chief of AMC, stated that the “mastery of the built forms and the atmosphere manage to awaken a neighbourhood” and that the building is “distinguished by its timeless and poetic style that reshapes the urban space around an Italian like Piazza”.

CONGO: FORUM ON ARCHITECTURE

The Fédération des Architectes Francophones d’Afrique hosted ‘Le Forum sur l’Architecture’ 26-27 November 2022 in Brazzaville, Congo. Discussions centred around creating cities that respect building standards.

With the theme "Architecture for well-being: repairing the city", this Forum, coupled with the General Assembly of the Federation of French-speaking Architects of Africa, was marked by a series of addresses including that of the mayor of the city of Brazzaville, Dieudonné Bantsimba. UIA President José-Luis Cortés and Region V Council Member M. Sahby Gorgi were also present at the event.

MEXICO: NEW PRESIDENT

The Federación de Colegios de Arquitectos de la República Mexicana elected Victoria Paulina Rodríguez Mosqueda as president for the 2023-2024 term. Ms. Rodríguez holds a masters degree in landscape architecture and in architectural interior design. She was the first woman to be president of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Celaya A.C. and was a founding member of the Somos Arquitectura AC Foundation in addition to being the vice-president of the Celaya Business Coordinating Council and coordinator of the Architecture Competitions Commission at FCARM. She succeeds Marco Vergara.

URUGUAY: NEW PRESIDENT

The Sociedad de Arquitectos del Uruguay has elected Mercedes Espasandín as president. Founder of Elizalde & Espasandín Arquitectos, she possesses extensive experience in planning, design and construction management of residential and commercial architecture. Ms. Espasandín has also worked with the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining in various consultative roles. Ms. Espasandín has also served as a representative on the Board of the Institute of Design for the Order of Graduates at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism. She succeeds Natalia Brener.

EL SALVADOR: BIENAL EL SALVADOR

The 2022 El Salvador Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism took place on 28 November to 1 December 2022. Organised by the Colegio de Arquitectos de El Salvador, the event was held to showcase and reward the best works built during the last 5 years, designed by Salvadoran and foreign architects. The biennale also included a series of conferences and served as an academic, political and cultural space connecting the architectural profession with society. UIA President José-Luis Cortés and Cid Blanco, Co-director of the UIA Sustainable Development Goals Commission, participated in the event.

ECUADOR: BAQ 2022

The XIII Edition of the Quito Pan-American Biennale of Architecture - BAQ 2022 - was held from 14-18 November. UIA President José Luis Cortés was present at the event that officially recognised Juan Espinosa Páez (Ecuador) and Enrique Ciriani (Peru) for their contributions to architecture. The Biennale Grand Prize, the event’s highest distinction, was awarded to Smiljan Radic, Eduardo Castillo and Gabriela Medrano for the Biobío Regional Theatre (Chile) and José Amozurrutia, Gabriela Carrillo, Israel Espín, Carlos Facio, Eric Valdez, Álvaro Martínez, Fernando Venado and Eduardo Palomino for the Casa de Música (Mexico).

USA: 2023 GOLD MEDAL

Carol Ross Barney is the 2023 AIA Gold Medal winner. This award is the American Institute of Architects' (AIA) highest annual honour, recognising individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. According to the AIA, her focus on design excellence, social responsibility and generosity has made her an unrivaled architect for the people. Throughout all of her work, she has endeavoured to make the world a better place and, in doing so, made an indelible mark on the profession. Her pioneering approach and ethics exemplify the highest aspirations of architecture.

COLOMBIA: XXVIII BIENNALE

The publication of the 28th Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism of the Sociedad Colombiana de Arquitectos (SCA) is now available. The publication presents the 97 projects selected in 9 categories: Interior and Ephemeral Architecture, Urban and Landscape Design, Dissemination, Social Housing, Heritage Intervention, Research, Theory and Criticism, Urban and Regional Design, Architectural Project and Single, Two and Three Family Housing. With the theme Architecture for Health, the projects highlight the contributions of architecture to global, social and human health.

ARCHITECTS' COUNCIL OF EUROPE

On 24 November 2022, in Brussels, the Architects’ Council of Europe organised a public conference to explore challenges, threats and opportunities raised by Artificial Intelligence in the sector and consider how it could change Architecture and the practice of the architectural profession.  

This conference, which was meant to nurture a study commissioned by the ACE on the very same topic brought together AI experts, architects and researchers.

UNION OF MEDITERRANEAN ARCHITECTS

Amir Turki (Tunisia) has been elected president of the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR). An architect and planner, Mr. Turki has previously served the organisation as vice-president and assistant secretary general. He has also held elected positions at the Order of Architects of Tunisia. The incoming president takes over from Wassim Naghi (Lebanon). Also elected were Natalina Da Costa (France) as secretary general and Carmela Cannarella as treasurer.

UIA COUNCIL MEETING IN COLOMBIA

Members of Council met in Cartagena, Colombia on 21-22 November with several attending the meeting online. They discussed preparations for the main events including the Congresses in Copenhagen (2023), Barcelona (2026) as well as the Kuala Lumpur Forum (2024). The Council also received reports on the activities undertaken by the Bureau, Finance Committee, Communications Committee, Working Bodies and the Habitat Professionals Forum.  

The International Union of Architects (UIA) is an international non-governmental organisation based in Paris. Established in 1948, it is the only organisation representing architects across the globe working to unify architects, influence public policies on construction and development, and advance architecture in service to the needs of society.
