 UIA INTERNATIONAL FORUM 2022 IN MADRID

Hosted by the Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE), the 2022 UIA International Forum in Madrid (18-20 May 2022) will be the culmination of parallel events taking place all over the world on the theme of "Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers", including interactive maps and tools that demonstrate the main barriers to decent and affordable housing throughout the planet. The in-person event will address these barriers and propose best practices and solutions developed by experts.

Spanning the globe, from Vienna, Austria to Nayarit, Mexico, the biggest worldwide debate around housing affordability is available via online streaming for 25€.

   2022 UIA YEAR OF DESIGN FOR HEALTH  ▼

UIA WEBINAR: HEALTHY CITIES & PUBLIC SPACES

On Monday, 25 April at 14:00 Paris time, the UIA will host a live webinar on Healthy Cities and Public Spaces. The event will address the recurring pandemic and the incidence of climate change to which the built environment, through uncontrolled development, has contributed. The UIA Year of Design for Health, encompassing the goals of protecting, developing and restoring health, calls for an urgently needed, macro and micro reassessment of architectural planning and design as well as evidence-based design for healthy development.

LAUNCH: GREAT GREEN WALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION

The UIA has launched the Great Green Wall single stage student ideas competition open to all students in architecture of the world.  The objective of the competition is to spotlight innovative design ideas for providing simplified affordable housing within the 8000 km long, 16 km wide living region stretching across the Sahel-Savanah desert region from Dakar to Djibouti known as the Great Green Wall (GGW). This competition was initiated by the UIA’s Region V to engage the global community of architecture students in the effort to harness the benefits of the UN Sustainable Development Goals to architecture in the service of the GGW.

RESULTS: COMPETITION FOR DESIGN OF THE AREA SURROUNDING THEATRE A’, LARISSA 

The team led by Armando dal Fabbro (Italy) has been declared winner of the International Open Ideas Competition for the Design of the Surrounding Area of the Ancient Theatre A’ of Larissa.  This competition invited architects to submit their entries for transformation of an inactive ancient open-air theatre dating from the 3rd century BC into a point of reference and identity for the modern city of Larissa, the fourth-most populous urban center in Greece.

RESULTS: COMPETITION FOR THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE 

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) (USA)along with team members Argenia Ingeniería y Arquitectura (Spain), Buro Happold Limited (UK) and HCP Arquitectos y U has won the international multidisciplinary project competition with pre-qualification for the design of the new JRC Site Headquarters in Seville, Spain organised by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC). Jury members especially appreciated the monumental power of the white solar energy shading canopy evocative of a strong Andalusian identity and its appealing integration with the adjacent surrounding space.

WINNERS TO BE ANNOUNCED: THE DAYLIGHT AWARD

The 2022 laureates of the Daylight Award will be announced at a live online event, on 16 May 2022 at 18:30 CET, the UNESCO International Day of Light. The Award honours and supports daylight research and daylight in architecture, for the benefit of human health, well-being and the environment. Established by the philanthropic foundations, VILLUM FONDEN, VELUX FONDEN and VELUX STIFTUNG, and endorsed by the UIA, it is conferred biennially in two categories: The Daylight Award for Research and The Daylight Award for Architecture.

UNITED KINGDOM : 2022 RIBA FELLOWS

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)  announced 23 new Honorary Fellowships. Awarded annually to people who are not architects, but who have contributed to architecture, the RIBA Fellows are recognised for their efforts to “improve the quality of design and ... of the built environment in a more sustainable way…”

CANADA : 2022 RAIC GOLD MEDAL 

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has awarded Jerome Markson the 2022 RAIC Gold Medal, highlighting his nearly six decade long architectural practice. The RAIC Gold Medal is the highest honour that the Institute can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture.

From 23 to 24 June, the French National Order of Architects (CNOA), Mediterranean Union of Architects (UMAR), Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Montpellier (ENSAM) and GRF HITLab are hosting a conference on rehabilitating contemporary architecture in the Mediterranean. The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) is organising the 13th edition of its annual Lagos Architects Forum in hybrid form from 4 to 7 May with the theme "What's Lagos?".This year, the discussions will address viable solutions to building collapse.

CIALP: INTERNATIONAL FORUM, 7TH EDITION

The Conselho Internacional de Arquitectos de Língua Portuguesa (CIALP) is holding its 7th International Forum on the subject of Tourism and Architecture from 3 to 5 May 2022 in Luanda, Republic of Angola. The event will comprise two Round Tables, a traveling photography exhibition, Arquitecturas em Português: Diálogos Emergentes, and the CIALP General Assembly.

UMAR SUMMER WORKSHOPS

The Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) is organising 3 Summer Workshops for students in 2022 in Cyprus, Greece and Tunisia. The 1st Summer Workshop will take place in Epirus, Greece, from 4–10 September with the theme, The Museum of Modern Architecture at the Mediterranean (MMAM). Registration opens on 1 May.
