This year, World Architecture Day will take place on Monday 3 October 2022, the theme will be architecture for well-being

This year’s theme is in line with the designation of 2022 as the UIA Year of Design for Health and the Union’s commitment to use evidence-based design to promote health in buildings and cities

This World Architecture Day, we will go beyond the role of architecture in making our lives better, by protecting, developing and restoring health to examine how architects can better contribute to the physical, emotional, environmental, financial and social wellness of all humankind while having a positive impact on the environment.

UIA 2030 AWARD: WINNERS

The winners of the UIA 2030 Award were announced at a hybrid ceremony during the World Urban Forum 11 (WUF11) in Katowice, Poland. Organised in partnership with UN Habitat, the award promotes the work of architects that contributes to the delivery of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The first cycle of a biennial awards programme to run through 2030, the competition invited architects around the world to submit entries for built projects which demonstrate design quality and have made significant contributions towards achievement of some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Submissions were received from 125 projects in 40 countries.

INTERNATIONAL VELUX AWARD: REGIONAL WINNERS

The 2022 edition of the biannual student ideas competition, the International VELUX Award has announced ten Regional Winners. The jury met in Copenhagen to examine 507 projects submitted from 211 schools of architecture around the world. Organised around the theme, “Light of Tomorrow”, students entered projects in one of two categories: Daylight in Buildings or Daylight investigations. The two global winners will be announced at the World Architecture Festival taking place in Lisbon, Portugal from 30 November to 2 December.

POLAND:  NEW PRESIDENT 

Agnieszka Kalinowska-Sołtys is the new President of Stowarzyszenie Architektow Polskich (SARP). An Architect partner at APA Wojciechowski Architekci since 2010, she studied Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning. A Co-founder of the National Association of Supported Sustainable Building, she succeeds Jerzy Grochulski in the position.

ROMANIA: NEW PRESIDENT 

Ştefan Bâlici is the new President of the Romanian Order of Architects (OAR) for the term 2022-2026. A Graduate of the University of Architecture and Urbanism "Ion Mincu" in Bucharest, where he currently lectures, he has been the Director of the National Heritage Institute of Romania since 2016 and is a founding member of the Association for Architecture, Restoration and Archaeology (ARA). . He succeeds Alexandru Găvozdea in the position.

JAPAN:  NEW PRESIDENT 

Naomi Sato is the new President of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) for the 2022-2024 term, succeeding Masaharu Rokushika. He studied Architecture at the University of Tokyo before completing his masters at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. Naomi Sato has worked internationally for I.M. Pei & Partners and Rafael Vinoly Architects in Tokyo & New York before founding his own firm, Naomi Sato Architects in 1996.

THE PHILIPPINES: NEW PRESIDENT 

Richard Garcia has been inaugurated as the President of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) 2022-2023. 
A Graduate of the University of Santo Tomas- College of Architecture, he is an ASEAN Architect who specialises in commercial mixed-use projects. Richard Garcia is also the Vice-President of Visionary Architecture Inc. He succeeds Armando Eugene C. De Guzman III in the position.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Trinidad & Tobago Institute of Architects is organizing an international conference in Port-of-Spain 8 - 10 August on the theme "Sustainability or Submergence - Rising above the Surf"

In conjunction with the conference, the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) will hold its 23rd General Assembly. UIA President José Luis Cortés will participate in this event.

MALAYSIA: WORLD CLASS SUSTAINABLE CITIES  2022 

The City of Kuala Lumpur will host the ‘13th International Conference on World Class Sustainable Cities 2022  on 13 September 2022.

 This year’s WCSC conference series is themed ‘KL2040: Towards A Liveable Urban Future’. It will focus on and explore how and what proactive steps need to be taken to foster a ‘Resilient, Sustainable & Liveable City’.

SPAIN: CSCAE GOLD MEDAL 2022

The Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE) have awarded Carme Pinòs and Carlos Puente the CSCAE Gold Medal, attributed since 1981. This award, the highest distinction given by the CSCAE, recognises individuals or institutions for their outstanding contribution to architecture. The jury esteemed that the ex-aequo laureats’ work constitutes "two committed ways of practicing the profession that reflect the importance of quality architecture.”

AUA: 13TH CONGRESS & GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The AUA General Assembly, which took place from 6 to 7 July 2022 in Rabat, Morocco, included elections of new officers for the 2022-2025 term. Donatien Kasseyet Kalume from Democratic Republic of Congo was elected President. He is a 1991 graduate of the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture St Luc and the Institut Supérieur d’Urbanisme et de Rénovation Urbaine in Brussels. After several years of practice in Belgium, he returned to the DRC 2005 and founded his firm, AXCESS Congo. He succeeds Victor Leonel (Angola) as AUA President. Vinesh Chintaram (Mauritius) and Olanrewaju Olusola (Nigeria) were respectively elected Secretary General and Treasurer. UIA President José Luis Cortés was present at this event.

MONA RADY ELECTED CHAIR OF THE HABITAT PROFESSIONALS FORUM 

Mona Rady has been re-elected as Chair of the Habitat Professionals Forum (HPF) for the period 2022-24 at the General Assembly held at the World Urban Forum 11 (WUF 11) in Katowice, Poland. She is a member of the Council of the Society of Architects of Egypt (SEA) and runs her own architectural firm Art&Architecture founded in 2001. The HPF is a voluntary affiliation of international and regional associations of Human Settlements Professionals involved in sustainable urban development. It aims to foster cooperation and partnership between Human Settlements Professionals and UN-Habitat.

ICOMOS GENERAL ASSEMBLY & EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL ASSEMBLY 

The ICOMOS Annual General Assembly and Extraordinary General Assembly will take place in Bangkok, Thailand on 28 October 2022 as a hybrid event. 

This year, the ICOMOS Advisory Council will hold its Scientific Symposium 2022 on 29 - 30 October at the Fine Arts Department Complex (Bangkok, Thailand) on the theme "Religious Heritage: Celebrating and Conserving Places of Religious and Ritual Significance in a Global World and in Changing Climates."
