 THE UIA AT WORLD URBAN FORUM 11 

The UIA has been invited to contribute to the eleventh edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF 11) in Katowice, Poland with the theme, Transforming Our Cities for a Better Urban Future. The UIA will organise two side events in Katowice: the hybrid awards ceremony for the inaugural edition of the UIA 2030 Award on 28 June, 14:00 to 15:30, preceded by From the urban crisis to the challenges of recovering Ukrainian cities and territories, 12:30 to 14:00 (Multifunction Hall). These initiatives are part of the partnership between the UIA and UN Habitat.

COPENHAGEN 2023: JUNE NEWSLETTER

The newsletter for the 2023 UIA World Congress taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark is out. Confirmed keynote speakers include architect Francis Kéré, 2021 winner of the UIA Robert Matthew Prize, attributed triennially for Sustainable and Humane Environments.

FRANCE: CONFERENCE

The Contemporary Built Heritage Conservation & Rehabilitation in the Mediterranean Conference (23 to 24 June) will be livestreamed here on YouTube.Co-organised by the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Architectes français, the Union of Mediterranean Architects and the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture of Montpellier, panelists will discuss preserving, conserving, renovating or transforming buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of Mediterranean contemporary architecture.Simultaneous translation in French and English will be available.

SPAIN: ARCHITECTURE LAW 

The Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) in collaboration with the General Directorate of Urban Agenda and Architecture of the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, has passed a Law on Quality Architecture. CSCAE President Marta Vall-llossera called the law a “milestone for the profession, since it establishes the general interest of Architecture, for its undeniable contribution to the well-being of people and ... places our country in a leadership position within the European Union.”

USA:  ANNUAL CONFERENCE 

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is holding its annual conference from 22-25 June 2022 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago. The event will feature a moderated conversation with former United States President Barack Obama.

CANADA: RAIC & CCA MEDALS  

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) announced the recipients of the 2022 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture celebrating excellence in recently built projects completed by Canadian architects.

COLOMBIA: 2022 BIENNIAL 

The Colombian Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism will take place from 14 to 19 November 2022.Organised by the Colombian Society of Architects (CSA) since 1962,  it spotlights significant recent Colombian architectural work whose quality preserves and improves the environment.

MALAYSIA: 2024 UIA INTERNATIONAL FORUM

The city of Kuala Lumpur will host the next UIA International Forum in 2024. The event, organised by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), will have the theme, Diversecity. Provisional dates are 12 and 13 November 2024.

SOUTH AFRICA: NEW PRESIDENT

Amira Osman is2022-2023 President of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA).Professor of architecture and practicing architect, she headed Scientific Committee Head for the 2014 UIA World Congress, Architecture Otherwhere. She succeeds Ruben Reddy in the position.

UNITED KINGDOM: ROYAL GOLD MEDAL

On 15 June, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awarded the 2022 Royal Gold Medal to Balkrishna Doshi in an online ceremony, broadcast from Ahmedabad, India and London, UK. The event was followed by a debate with RIBA President Simon Allford and an audience Q&A.

BRAZIL: UIA GOLD MEDAL

The Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB) presented the UIA Gold Medal for lifetime achievement to the family of Paulo Mendes da Rocha on 23 May 2022.

ARCASIA: ANNUAL CONFERENCE & AWARDS CEREMONY

Arcasia is holding its annual conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 4 to 9 September 2022 with the theme, The Future of Sustainable Urban Development. The Awards Ceremony for the 2022 Arcasia Awards for Architecture 2022 will take place on 6 September.

UMAR: ANNUAL CONFERENCE & AWARDS CEREMONY

Following its Extraordinary General Assembly held on the 22 June 2022 in Montpellier, France, the Union of Mediterranean Architects (UMAR) adopted new statutes and a transition plan prior to the elections of its next Council and Bureau in September. A conference on preserving Mediterranean architecture organised by the French National Order of Architects (CNOA) and hosted at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Montpellier (ENSAM) follows the EGA.

AUA: 13TH CONGRESS & GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Conseil National de l'Ordre des architectes (CNOA) of Morocco is hosting the upcoming 13th Congress of the Africa Union of Architects (AUA), to be held in Rabat, Morocco. The Congress, with theme, Rising Africa, Promoting Responsible Architecture, will take place from 4 to 5 July 2022.  The AUA General Assembly will follow, from 6 to 7 July 2022. ALLAN RODGER (1935-2022)

The UIA offers its condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of Allan Rodger, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at The University of Melbourne, valued member of the UIA Sustainable Development Goals Commission and impassioned advocate for sustainable architecture and development. Long active in his section, the Australian Institute of Architects, he aided the UIA in the implementation of its global sustainability mission.
