Please donate now to send twice as much aid to people like Liudmyla, a farmer who hid in her freezing potato cellar for more than a month while the bombs rained down.

 

When the shelling began, Liudmyla fled underground. She only had candles for light and slept on top of her potatoes, wrapping herself in blankets.  

“I was very afraid. It was cold but I had to endure it,” she said.

After a particularly heavy blast, Liudmyla emerged to find five homes ablaze and her own home badly damaged. Despite the danger, she refused to leave.

“I did not want to leave everything,” she said. “My mum and dad and a son are buried here. So I’m not going anywhere. My place is here.”

When fighting in the area ended, UNHCR’s dedicated staff and partners helped Liudmyla repair her home, making it warm and secure again. She recently hosted her 70th birthday party at home, where she served local dishes made with her own potatoes.
