Help SAAM Create Educational Resources for Kids SAAM art educators work year-round to create innovative projects to spark curiosity. They were excited to focus on William H. Johnson’s Fighters for Freedom series, created in the mid-1940s. SAAM’s educators describe the artworks as “puzzles begging to be solved: full of intriguing people, places, and symbols.” Inspired by the series, they created two new free digital resources to decode the historical figures and multi-layered symbols represented in the artworks.
With these free resources, students can: - Explore notable African American activists, scientists, teachers, and performers as well as international heads of state working to bring peace to the world.
- Highlight specific parts of select paintings and learn about the meanings behind the symbols.
- Connect art and history in unexpected ways by learning about related objects from other Smithsonian museums.
