Understand your nervous system

Dear Yogi,

Do you know the feeling before a job interview? Your throat gets dry, your hands get clammy, your breath becomes shallow and your heart starts to beat faster… Why are we responding to a meeting as if we’re being chased by a tiger?

Our autonomic nervous system, which tries to protect us, responds to stressors that are not life-threatening, such as work deadlines, traffic jams, or financial worries, just as if we were facing a physical threat. And while this response was crucial for survival in ancient times (so we can “fight” or “flee”), in modern life not only is it unnecessary, it can actually wear us down.

There are many effective techniques in yoga that can help regulate and calm your nervous system, so that you can maintain your balance and develop a healthier relationship with your environment.
