Imagine that all of life’s difficulties suddenly melt away. Nothing disrupts the day or causes pain, there’s no need to cry or sigh or even feel frustration. Life is smooth.
But is it happy?
According to Harvard professor and author Arthur C. Brooks, the answer isn’t necessarily yes.
“Happiness requires a lot of unhappy when you finally confront life in all of its complexities,” Brooks explains on The Russell Moore Show. As it turns out, addressing challenges and even sadness can strengthen one’s sense of purpose and enhance happiness.
In other words, there’s tremendous hope for happiness in this life—not in spite of hardships, but through them.
