Uncertainty remains as Unity College makes deep cuts and considers abandoning its campus 

  • Unity College abruptly laid off 33 members of its faculty and staff and furloughed another 20 on Monday, ahead of a plan to retool its academic offerings and possibly put the campus up for sale. Employees say they found out about the changes in an email. 
Court appoints receiver to oversee shuttered Hampden waste plant that owes more than $50M

  • The receiver will now oversee the plant that has been shuttered since the end of May as the towns that send it their waste work to find new owners. The Coastal Resources of Maine plant owes money to a range of vendors and creditors.
Outcomes hold as Maine reruns ranked-choice races after missing 13,000 ballots
  • The outcomes of four July primary elections decided by ranked-choice voting did not change after the office of Secretary of State Matt Dunlap retabulated results on Monday because of errors that led to more than 13,000 ballots being missed.
A petition to defund the police is gaining traction in Rockland

  • About 600 people -- and counting -- have endorsed a petition to defund Rockland police. City councilors voiced their initial support of the petition Monday night, saying they’re open to discussions. It comes as petitioners across the country are demanding changes to policing, following a growing number of high-profile cases involving police brutality. 

Weekly rentals in Maine are ‘busier than ever’ as tourists seek socially distanced vacations
  • Things were looking bleak in April and May for the state's tourism industry. But the world of weekly vacation rentals has seen a spike in demand since the start of July, when Maine exempted a number of northeastern states from its two-week quarantine requirement. “I thought I was going to lose my shirt this summer," said one weekly rental agent on Mount Desert Island.

Brewer students will return to school in person 2 days a week

  • Most Brewer students this fall will return to school in person two days a week and continue learning remotely the other three days.
    Students will be divided into two groups, and each group will attend in person two days, with all state-prescribed safety protocols — such as masks and social distancing — in place under the plan Brewer Superintendent Gregg Palmer presented to the city’s school committee Monday evening.
