BYU 1984 Magazine

On Feb 28, 1850, the University of Utah (chartered as the University of Deseret) was founded under the direction of Latter-day Saint prophet Brigham Young — becoming the first state university west of the Missouri River, Jason Swensen writes.

“The work of our founders is the bedrock for the student-focused teaching, innovative research, world-class healthcare and thoughtful service performed every day by our campus community,” university President Taylor Randall said in a statement.

Meet the Utah kid who is president of a major East Coast pro sports franchise

One of Jake Reynolds' athletic goals was to be named Deseret News All-State as a high school athlete, Aaron Shill writes.

That goal was realized in 2002, when Reynolds — as a 5-10 senior guard at Waterford High in Sandy, Utah — was named Class 1A MVP for his skills at basketball.

Now his goal is to bring a third Stanley Cup to New Jersey, as he is the president of the National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils.

His parents still live in Utah and are Utah Hockey Club season ticket holders.

“I remind them constantly that their grandchildren’s livelihoods are dependent on how the Devils do, so the Devils still will need to remain the number one team in the house,” Reynolds said. “(Utah) can be the number two team and they can be the favorite Western Conference team, but the Devils still need to hold court there."

The Utah Hockey Club go up against the Devils tonight at 7 p.m.
