The future location of the Sundance Film Festival, which for 40 years has been headquartered in Park City, Utah, is still uncertain, but one thing that’s clear is the massive effort that goes into putting together the lineup each year.
“The focus has always been on a place of discovery and new voices. That’s what Sundance is about, and that’s not going to change,” John Nein, who has been a Sundance Film Festival programmer for over 20 years, told the Deseret News.
The latest Sundance lineup includes Jennifer Lopez, Conan O’Brien and Benedict Cumberbatch — and a Utah-based film. Read more to see the rest.
Martha Hughes Cannon statue installed in U.S. Capitol’s Emancipation Hall
Current and former elected officials, religious leaders, business leaders and many women from BetterDays 2020 — a Utah organization focused on elevating the stories of Utah women like Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon — filled Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Most of the women — and some of the men — wore the suffrage colors of gold, white and violet as they gathered to celebrate the installation of the statue of Dr. Cannon to represent the state of Utah.
Here are three key points:
The trailblazing woman from Utah, Martha Hughes Cannon was a suffragist, doctor, senator, orator, wife and mother.
Among the 100 statues (two each for all 50 states), the statue is the 14th woman.
During her speech to thousands, Minority Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts said that Cannon knew “that every break with precedent, every step toward equality, wasn’t just in service to her daughters. It was in service to all Americans.”

With just two weeks until children wake up on Christmas morning, hoping Santa Claus has left them a special gift, the community’s support is more vital than ever. This holiday season, Saint Nick could use an extra hand to ensure no child feels overlooked or forgotten. More than 900 families still hope to be sponsored through United Way’s Sub For Santa program.
That is more than 2,300 children in need in Utah County alone.
Though donations have been record-breaking this year, “We’re finding that there are more people that are having hard times than we had anticipated,” United Way of Utah County President and CEO Bill Hulterstrom told the Deseret News on Wednesday.
Nearly half (47%) of families this year have never asked for Christmas help before.
“One of our objectives is that people who are helping and people who need help feel connected.” He shared that there have been times when sponsors drop off presents for families and are invited inside, where children have drawn heartfelt pictures to thank them. However, simply donating online also works, and a volunteer will do the shopping and delivery for you.
