2021's first winter storm targets Minnesota

Good morning!

Today's winter storm will likely bring several inches of snow or a wintry mix of rain, snow and ice in most of Minnesota. If you're planning to drive in the western parts of the state, be extra careful -- 50 mph wind gusts will cause blowing snow, reduced visibility and near blizzard conditions.

Donald Trump is now the only U.S. president who's been impeached twice. But removing him from office before Jan. 20 seems pretty unlikely.

Although the House voted to impeach him for a second time in a somewhat bipartisan vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated that he won't bring the Senate back for a trial before Biden's Inauguration Day.

The milestone of the House's rather symbolic vote was that 10 GOP members of the floor joined Democrats condemning Trump for his role in inciting the violence at the U.S. Capitol. All of Minnesota's eight House representatives, however, voted along the party lines.

Is Minnesota's COVID-19 outbreak finally fading? Recent numbers show us some positive signs, but another upswing is still a possibility.

While the data over the past few days look hopeful, officials still don’t believe we are in the clear. They believe another surge in cases and deaths is likely in the coming weeks following the year-end holidays.

Here are Minnesota’s current COVID-19 statistics:
  • 5,774 deaths (50 new)
  • 440,354 positive cases (1,504 new), 419,139 off isolation (95 percent)
  • 6 million tests, 3.1 million people tested (about 55 percent of the population
  • 5.3 percent seven-day positive test rate (officials find 5 percent or more concerning)

A month after Minnesota began its COVID vaccination, lawmakers ask Gov. Walz: Where are the shots?

Minnesota legislators are pressing state officials to speed up COVID-19 vaccinations through shuffled priority lists, reduced regulations and community vaccination clinics. Republicans are the most vocal in second guessing the state’s current plan and pace for shots. DFL Gov. Tim Walz says kinks in the federally managed distribution system are the main holdup.

At 9 a.m. today: A second impeachment, so now what?  Now that the House has impeached Donald Trump for the second time and we are only six days out from the inauguration of a new president, what happens next? And what does it mean for the ambitions and agenda of President-elect Biden? Host Kerri Miller will be joined by two politics experts to discuss the topic.
