However, the region’s comics artists have actively driven dramatic shifts in the art form. Today, the local comics scene is diverse and vibrant, offering much more than just superhero stories. Join us for a crash course in comics history with cartoonist Justin Hall and for live, illustrated storytelling from innovative Bay Area artists Rina Ayuyang, Fred Noland and Julia Wertz. Eager to dive into their next great read? KQED will host a mini zine and comics fest after the event.

Reclaiming Curanderismo Featuring Author Ingrid Rojas Contreras

Curanderismo is a pre-colonial system of healing practices across the Americas that has survived to this day through home remedies passed through generations. Its techniques may include herbal medicine, massage, prayer, energy healing and other spiritual practices with the goal of restoring harmony and balance for well-being. Join us as we reclaim curanderismo through conversation with National Book Award finalist Ingrid Rojas Contreras, reflect on the influences of different Diaspora cultures on the practice and learn about ways to start your own healing journey from Bay Area practitioners.

Presented in partnership with the Hayward Recreation & Parks District at the newly renovated Douglas Morrisson Theater.
