Dear John,
Today I want to tell you about some improvements to the digital experience on chronicle.com. Little did we know when we started planning them last year that they would arrive during a most disruptive and transformational time for the world, for higher education, and for The Chronicle.
Despite the many uncertainties weâre all facing, several fundamental truths still hold: Higher education remains a powerful and vital force in our society; academic professionals need to understand how their world is changing; and a reliable source of accurate and up-to-date information is essential to help solve pressing problems. The Chronicle is that resource, and we remain steadfastly dedicated to serving readers like you.
Starting today, youâll notice some improvements to chronicle.com: Improved search functionality, heightened mobile responsiveness, and cutting-edge data visualizations will create a better online platform and a better experience for you.
Youâll also find that our website will no longer distinguish between free and premium articles. Instead, non-subscribing readers will need to create a free account that will grant access to any article on our site. Each month, such visitors will have a limited number of free âreadsâ before they are asked to support our work with a paid subscription.
We know that our previous paywall often prevented many people from sampling some of our best work. We also know that the need to share our excellent journalism widely and find support for it has never been more important. We believe this model will serve both of those goals.
During the new registration process, youâll be asked to tell us a few things about yourself, such as your institution, your role on campus, and your area of focus. Weâll use that information to recommend content, bring you curated news about your college, and share newly improved job alerts relevant to your specific career interests.
Ultimately, this change will put more power into your hands, allow us to improve your chronicle.com experience, and ensure that our good work reaches a broader slice of higher education.
Weâre committed to being transparent throughout your experience on chronicle.com. Weâll always let you know how many free articles you have left on the site before we ask you to subscribe. And weâll use the information you provide us, like your email address and registration attributes, to better customize your experience. You can always opt out of receiving marketing messages from us, just as you can adjust your newsletter preferences whenever you like.
We know that buying a subscription is a commitment, so we donât ask you lightly to help support our work. In todayâs environment, that support makes all the difference. Your subscription allows us to bring you the best higher-education journalism in the world, at a time when the world needs more of it.
As always, we value your feedback and encourage you to contact us with any questions, either by email at service@chronicle.com or by calling 800-728-2803.
Be well.
