End of an era: Florida gets with the timesWhen’s the last time you fired up your trusty old telegraph and sent a slow-moving message halfway across the country? Never, you say? Well, don’t tell the Florida government because they’re just now updating their telegraph laws for the 21st century. A new bill was recently placed on Governor Ron DeSantis’ desk that removed an entire chapter of state law regulating the telegraph industry. Statutes included strict $50 fines for slow deliveries, as well as rules for telegraph operators to follow. But these laws, which haven’t really changed since 1913, are now finally off the books. Hopefully, lawmakers will update the rules for the Pony Express next and maybe Morse code after that. Despite common misconceptions, the last telegraph wasn’t sent in the early 1900s. It was in 2006!
