S.C. nursing homes faces higher COVID-19 fatality rates

According to a recent AARP report, South Carolina is one of the deadliest states in the country for nursing home residents with COVID-19. The state also faces a higher than average shortage of nurses and aides, prompting health care advocates to seek alternative measures to bridge the workforce gap.

Upstate university to go back online

Students and employees at one Upstate university learned Thursday that classes will be online-only after the Thanksgiving break. The final day of in-person instruction for the semester is scheduled to be Nov. 24.

MUSC makes $5.6 billion economic impact on state

A six-month economic impact study shows that MUSC’s education programs, patient care and research contribute billions of dollars to the economy. With 17,000-plus employees, 38,186 South Carolina jobs are directly or indirectly related to MUSC, according to Joseph Von Nessen, research economist at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of S.C., who led the study.
