US aviation industry cautiously optimistic about deal to end shutdown

The US aviation industry welcomed news that Congress and the White House have struck an agreement to reopen the government for three weeks, while expressing disappointment that the temporary truce will not be enough to provide stability to government workers who have gone over a month without receiving their paychecks.


FAA orders ground delay for LaGuardia Airport flights

The FAA on Jan. 25 ordered a ground delay for flights destined for New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) because of an uptick in air traffic controllers calling in sick at a distant enroute center, apparently because of the US government shutdown.

Executives from Southwest Airlines announced the carrier’s planned expansion into Hawaii will likely be delayed for months, a result of the ongoing US partial government shutdown, which has furloughed the FAA workers needed to certify the new routes.
