First-time claims increase from previous week to 853K

The week ending Dec. 5 saw first-time unemployment claims of 853,000, a slight increase from the previous week's 716,000 claims, according to the Labor Department. "This recent surge suggests that claims are not just stagnating, they're actively worsening," said economist Daniel Zhao of Glassdoor.
