| TikTokâs plans to allay data security concerns were simply insufficient, US government insists in new court submission | | The US government says that TikTokâs proposals for addressing data security concerns were ultimately insufficient, despite extensive negotiations, which is why the White House supported the TikTok-targeting sell-or-be-banned law that was passed by US Congress earlier this year.Â
Bringing in Oracle as a US-based overseer of the TikTok platform didnât help, officials add, because the amount of source code on the TikTok platform would make such an overseer role more or less impossible, even for a company as big as Oracle.Â
These statements are made a new court submission responding to TikTokâs ongoing bid to overturn the sell-or-be-banned law through the courts. TikTok and its owner Bytedance has already hit back at that submission, criticising the fact some of the information is redacted, and insisting that the sell-or-be-banned law is still unconstitutional on free speech grounds.Â
âThe TikTok ban would silence 170 million Americansâ voices, violating the First Amendmentâ, a TikTok spokesperson says. âAs we've said before, the government has never put forth proof of its claims. We remain confident we will prevail in courtâ. | Read the full story | |

Releases & Tours | đ Read today's One Liners in full | | South Africa pushes back against US criticism of fair use copyright reforms | | The government of South Africa has pushed back at criticism made by the US copyright industries over a plan to introduce the principle of fair use into South African copyright law, possibly because itâs aware that introducing fair use in that way might make the country more attractive to AI companies.
The US-based International Intellectual Property Alliance is concerned that South Africaâs plan will result in too many limitations on copyright within the country, which could weaken copyright protection and be unfairly exploited by various users of content, not least AI companies.Â
However, the South African government insists that the proposed changes will ensure that its copyright regime can âkeep up with innovationâ and the âchanging digital environmentâ.Â
