Situational Analysis - Nov. 12, 2020Welcome to Thursday. I'm so old that I remember when we almost always knew the winners in virtually all races by at least the wee hour on election night. But that was well before computers, sophisticated software and instant digital/mobile communications made everything faster and more efficient. The closer I look at the 2020 election results, the more delicate the Democrats' victory looks. Democrats can revel in winning the presidency and defeating the hated Donald Trump. Joe Biden won the White House. But if he doesn't govern in a centrist way, he will certainly not be listening to what the voters said. There's a reasonable chance that Biden does want to be a centrist president. If so, he might be successful. But he'll have to fight the left wing of his own party. I don't know where those final votes are coming from. But I'm surprised that incumbent Democrat Ben McAdams didn't win rather easily. He has always been well liked and his approval ratings have usually been the best of the congressional delegation. McAdams is a Democrat and a centrist in a Republican-leaning congressional district, but he fits the district well. He had an enormous amount of money. The race was the nastiest in decades, but both sides were about equally nasty. Republican opponent Burgess Owens wasn't a really strong candidate. He campaigned as a culture warrior focused on broad conservative themes, rather than as a practical problem-solver.  Uinta Mountain lakes, arctic greyling & warBy LaVarr Webb Yesterday was Veteran's Day, and I thought a lot about my own father, LaVarr B. Webb, who served in World War II in Italy. When the United States entered the war, my father was married with two little girls and a third on the way. So he didn't immediately volunteer to go to war. But as the war went on, and more men were needed, he was drafted and he willingly left his young family to serve in the Army. He was sent to Italy toward the end of the war in Europe. He did not see heavy fighting, but he did see the horrors and destruction of war. When the war in the European theater ended with the surrender of Germany, he was put on a troop ship headed for the invasion of Japan. Utah HeadlinesDeseret News

United Utah calls on GOP leaders to urge Trump to concede The United Utah Party issued the following statement: The election for president is essentially over. It was not a close election in the popular vote. Former Vice-President Joe Biden received over 5 million votes across the nation more than President Donald Trump. Nor is it a close election in the electoral vote as, according to Fox News, Biden already has won 20 more votes than needed. The gap between the two candidates in Pennsylvania is nearly 50,000 votes. In 2016, President Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 44,000 votes and claimed victory. In fact, even though the 2016 election across the nation was closer than this election, by this point Clinton had conceded, and Trump had claimed victory and met with President Obama. Democrats' Eleanor Roosevelt luncheon is Nov. 30 I'm excited to announce that the 27th Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Luncheon will be taking place on Monday, Nov. 30, at 12 noon. Eleanor Roosevelt said, "My message to women is to get in the game and stay in the game." Utah women have always been in the game. From Seraph Young, the first woman to vote in the modern United States, to the 27 Eleanor Roosevelt Award winners, we have a long history of women leading the way. Remembering the service of our veterans Veterans Day is when we try to express--using words--a sense of gratitude that is actually impossible to describe. For those, like me, who have not served in our armed forces, it is impossible to fully appreciate their sacrifice. There are so many different types of people who have served, and we honor all of them. One type of service is that given by our active duty and reserve members like former North Ogden Mayor, Major Brent Taylor, who served in Afghanistan, and paid the ultimate price exactly two years ago.
