TICK TOCK1 day to the Salt Lake County Board of Canvassers meeting (11/17/2020 Today At Utah Policy Election turning dreadful for Utah DemocratsBy Staff What started out as a really good election night on Nov. 3 for Salt Lake County Democrats is turning into some big disappointments as more and more ballots are being counted. It appeared that Salt Lake County -- by far the state's largest in population and political influence -- would re-elect U.S. Rep. Ben McAdams to Congress, take at least three Utah House seats away from incumbent Republicans and re-elect several county government Democrats to their posts. But as of this past weekend, with only a handful of ballots yet to be counted, it appears:  Webb Wrap: Owens can't be just a conservative ideologue . . . Protect education funding . . . Utah's brand of conservatismBy LaVarr Webb Utah's 4th Congressional District really is a swingy district. It appears that Burgess Owens will win back the district for Republicans. I wrongly predicted that Ben McAdams would win re-election. I didn't think the 4th District would elect a hardcore conservative culture warrior. But thanks to Trump turning out the Republican base and a solid turnout in Utah County, and without popular ballot proposals to draw out Democrats, Burgess appears headed for victory. I think the immense amount of negative advertising on both sides of the race was essentially a draw.  Trump should concede . . . and Democrats should have some humilityBy LaVarr Webb I voted for Pres. Trump, but I believe he should now concede. There is no pathway for him to win. It's time to put the election behind us and go forward with a new administration. The Trump administration should cooperate with the Biden transition team and prepare to turn over the federal government to the president-elect. I don't mind the liberal Democrats, never-Trumpers, the Washington establishment, big-tech, and the establishment media reveling in their win. There is absolute glee and ecstasy in defeating Trump. Policy NewsClean Air Caucus to discuss 2021 legislationThe final Bipartisan Clean Air Caucus Meeting for 2020 will be held on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting is being broadcast as a FACEBOOK LIVE on the Caucus' Facebook Page. During the meeting there will be a discussion of potential clean air legislation for the 2021 legislative session. There will also be a presentation from Division of Air Quality Director Bryce Bird. Zions Bank November economic snapshot for Utah Utah's economic recovery remains near the best in the nation. The Beehive State is the second closest state to recovering to its 2019 economic levels, with employment declining only 1% over the last year. While the unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 5% in September, the uptick is a side effect of the highest labor force participation rate in three years at 68.8%. Utah lost 14,800 jobs over the past year, but some industries gained jobs, with the construction (+7,500); trade, transportation, and utilities (+6,900); and other services (+3,300) sectors gaining the most jobs. Romney opens offices in Spanish Fork and Ogden U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney has announced the opening of his new Senate offices located in Spanish Fork and Ogden. The new office locations will assist Romney in providing assistance to local residents who need help with federal agency matters. "I am committed to ensuring Utahns continue to receive the assistance they need on issues related to Social Security, Medicare, veterans' benefits, and other federal matters," Romney said. "With the opening of these new offices, we will be able to better serve residents in and around Utah County and Northern Utah." EDCUtah names Colby Cooley as VP, Business Development The Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCUtah) has announced the promotion of Colby Cooley to vice president of business development. "In his five-plus years at EDCUtah, Colby Cooley has gained in-depth experience in a number of industry sectors and has excelled at project management and lead generation," said Theresa Foxley, president and CEO of EDCUtah. "His success in directing our Global Strategy & Outreach program and in coordinating with multiple partners to land complex expansions such as Northrop Grumman, Williams International, and others have earned him this promotion."
