Situational Analysis - March 31, 2021

It's Wednesday, the last day of March and that means it's National Crayon Day, National Tater Day and National Clams on the Half Shell Day. Taters for dinner it is. Boil them, mash them, stick them in a stew...

5 things you need to know

  1. G. Gordon Liddy, a former FBI agent, Army veteran and the mastermind behind the Watergate burglary, died Tuesday at age 90.
  2. Rep. Matt Gaetz is under investigation for an alleged sexual relationship with a minor which may have violated federal sex-trafficking laws. In 2017, he was the only member of Congress to vote against a law that gave the federal government more power and money to fight human trafficking.
  3. The two remaining Utah County commissioners want to move the entire budget office out from under the clerk/auditor's office and put it under their control. They forgot to ask current clerk/auditor Amelia Powers Gardner what she thought of the plan.
  4. Two three wildfires are already burning in Utah - and it's not even April.
  5. Jen Shah, from the "Real Housewives of Salt Lake City" was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and telemarketing and wire fraud.

The Office of the State Auditor (Office) today announces the release of its review of the State's contract with Banjo, Inc. (Banjo). Attorney General Reyes requested the Office review the contract for Banjo's public safety application Live Time. The circumstances surrounding Live Time posed several complex technical and social issues, including concerns regarding privacy and potential algorithmic bias. We recognize the compelling law enforcement interests underlying the associated procurement, particularly the possibility of leveraging technology to accelerate the safe rescue of abducted children.

Now that the rush to free the Ever Given has succeeded, the blame game can commence. The boat's shipping company, Taiwan-based Evergreen Marine, has blamed a strong gust of wind, but Jimmy Kimmel was skeptical "they finished this canal in 1869, in 150 years this is the first time they had wind?"
