Situational Analysis - October 23, 2020Welcome to Friday. Rest up this weekend for the last full week of the 2020 election. TICK TOCK11 days to the 2020 election (11/3/2020) Today At Utah PolicyFossil fuels are bridge to a carbon-free worldBy LaVarr Webb Pres. Trump and Joe Biden clashed vigorously over climate change and fossil fuels in the presidential debate Thursday evening. Trump defended the oil and gas industries, while Biden said he would phase out fossil fuels. In reality, validity exists in both of their positions. I firmly believe that fossil fuels will, in fact, be phased out, as Biden said. But not because of harsh regulations and mandates. It will occur because of advanced technology, innovation and because the market will demand clean energy.Webb's Wrap: A substantive debate . . . The era of big government . . . Let's wear masks! By LaVarr Webb Thursday's presidential debate was a lot better than I expected. Plenty of heated exchanges occurred, but Trump managed to stay in control and avoid being boorish. That, alone, was a victory for him. If Trump acted that way all the time, he would not have alienated so many mainstream Republicans and moderates. He seemed to have actually listened to his advisors in his debate preparation. He was several notches cooler than usual.Friday change of pace: The swallows are gone By LaVarr Webb I knew autumn was closing in fast when, suddenly, the swallows were gone. I'm not exactly sure when they disappeared. I know it was still relatively warm when, in the back of my mind, something seemed out of place in the evenings. I then realized the swallows were missing. We really love the swallows, even though they can be noisy and they make messes nesting in our shop and hay barn. But they keep the mosquito and bug population well in check. We have hardly any mosquitos, even with a lot of standing water. Utah HeadlinesDeseret News Jay Evensen: It's 2020, so why am I still getting robocalls? "Our family was deeply saddened to hear of Collin's death. He was an incredible advocate for our youth and was one of the favorite speakers at our Uplift Families Parent Conferences. He had an immense impact on many families - not only in Utah, but worldwide. Collin taught us to be present, to put down our devices, and to safeguard our children from social media. The entire Hebert family prays for Collin's sweet wife, Elizabeth and their children. We know Collin's legacy will live on through them, and through the countless families he inspired. The governor and I send our sincere condolences at this time."McAdams blasts Owens' comments on Mitt Romney Congressman Ben McAdams called out Burgess Owens for his unwarranted, negative attacks on Sen. Mitt Romney, who Owens has said does not represent Utah's values during recent national news program interviews.Widely-circulated news reports quote Owens as saying, among other things, that "Mitt is not representative of Utah values." In contrast, Romney recently issued a call for a return to civility, saying that politics has moved away from a spirited debate "to a vile, vituperative, hate-filled morass that is unbecoming of any free nation.""I know Sen. Romney, I work with Sen. Romney and to me, no one cares more about Utah families, our state and our country than Sen. Romney. His character and integrity are beyond reproach and I wish more politicians would emulate his public service," said McAdams. "My opponent's attacks on Sen. Romney's faith and family values are offensive and just not what we are about here. Burgess Owens just doesn't get Utah."
