82-year-old author Margaret Atwood wielding a flamethrower is not something I ever expected to see.
But in a promo video for an "unburnable" edition of "The Handmaid's Tale," she shoots flames at a fireproof book. The one-of-a-kind book sold for $130,000 at auction yesterday, as I wrote in a Deseret News article.
How do Utahns grade on civics knowledge? Not great, UVU study finds
Apparently, Utahns are not acing civics.
Utahns were given a “D” grade on civics knowledge in a recent UVU study. The Center for Constitutional Studies at Utah Valley University surveyed 942 Utah adults, asking a series of factual questions and opinion statements to evaluate their knowledge of civics and political systems.
Some interesting statistics:
57% of respondents were able to identify the three branches of government.
37% correctly identified religion as a right guaranteed in the First Amendment.
20% knew that John Roberts is the chief justice of the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the White House’s chief economist, Jared Bernstein, detailed what he said are hallmarks of financial success in Utah and elsewhere across the country.
President Joe Biden is adamant about working with Congress to combat inflation and open the supply chain to ease the pain that U.S. residents are feeling, Bernstein added in a call with reporters.
Gov. Spencer Cox reacted by saying, "We appreciate that the Biden administration has recognized Utah as the best economy in the nation,”
“However, that success is in spite of — not because of — the president’s flawed policies that continue to fuel hyper-inflation."

All-America guard Shaylee Gonzales entered the NCAA transfer portal last week to the ire of the BYU faithful. Her 18.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game will be missed, but new team associate head coach Lee Cummard said her departure isn't a done deal yet.
“Shaylee, we’re here. We love you, and we want the best for you. Go explore, get what you need, the information, and we’ll go from there,” Cummard said in a "BYU Sports Nation" appearance.
