Efforts to organize at major companies like Starbucks and Amazon have made headlines recently. How do Utahns feel about labor unions?
According to a recent Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll:
- 54% somewhat or strongly approve of labor unions.
- 35% disapprove.
- 98% of those who identify as "very liberal" said they approve of unions, compared to just 20% among the “very conservative.”
- Support was highest among those between the ages of 18 and 40, with strong support dropping off with those age 41 and older.
Several people who responded to the poll said they generally approve of labor unions, while also expressing concerns about the potential for unions to be abused.
Edi Lorenz of Layton said she thinks unions provide much-needed protections for workers in Utah, which is an at-will employment state. But she said labor unions wield too much power and can drive up costs for consumers in labor-friendly states like her previous home of California.
