International awareness days mobilise political will and resources
This is the third year that the VCCC has marked World Cancer Day, an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control.  Held on 4 February each year, World Cancer Day is a great opportunity to add our voice to an international chorus speaking out about a disease that affects almost everyone. The premise of this awareness day aligns strongly with our efforts as an alliance and this year’s activities have been a particularly good illustration of our focus on meaningful consumer inclusion.

Cancer care in Indigenous populations
Special issue of the Journal of Global Oncology
In January, the Journal of Global Oncology published its first-ever special issue, compiled by Professor and Director of Oncology, Monash Health and JGO associate editor Eva Segelov, and Professor Gail Garvey, Menzies School of Health Research with the aim of promoting understanding about disparities in cancer outcomes for Indigenous people.

Congratulations to the eight nurses from VCCC member hospitals who joined the VCCC Nurse-led Research Partnership Post Program this week. The program aims to build a critical mass of research active-nurses who can drive better experiences and outcomes of care for patients and families by leading research.

Regional patients with cancer need clinical trials closer to home
Efforts to reduce the disparity for people living outside the city
Regional cancer patients experience several disadvantages including lower survival rates, due to healthcare access differentials. The VCCC Teletrials Program enables trials to be brought to the patient’s door, providing access to trial treatment locally thereby reducing travel, cost and social disruption.
