Glandt recognized with VCSU Foundation’s ‘Difference Maker Award’

The VCSU Foundation Office named Tom Glandt as the first recipient of its “Difference Maker Award” for his long-term volunteer efforts on behalf of VCSU. Glandt was recognized at a brief ceremony at Dacotah Bank in Valley City on Nov. 9.

The Difference Maker Award was adopted by the VCSU Foundation Office to recognize friends of the university who have made significant contributions to the university through dedicated service, promotion, financial support or other efforts.

“Tom has gone above and beyond year after year, giving of his time, talent, and treasure for the betterment of Valley City State University,” said Larry Robinson, executive director of the VCSU Foundation. “He is most deserving of this award because he has clearly been ‘Making A Difference’ at VCSU. We are most appreciative of Tom for his efforts. He makes us proud!”

Kim Hesch, assistant director of the VCSU Foundation and director of alumni relations, noted, “Tom has also been a major player in the success we have enjoyed with our annual spring Scholarship Auction. He has been a leader in that effort for nearly 10 years. During that time period, our proceeds have more than doubled.”

Pictured with Glandt (center), are (l to r) Loree Morehouse (data processing and research coordinator in the VCSU Foundation Office), Robinson, VCSU President Tisa Mason and Hesch.

Glandt is a financial advisor with Investment Centers of America at Dacotah Bank. His wife, Tara, also a VCSU volunteer, teaches fourth grade at Washington Elementary in Valley City. The couple has three children.

“VCSU is so fortunate to have well over 100 volunteers giving of their time in a host of different ways,” added Robinson. “They have been a big part of our family. The success we have enjoyed over the years is no accident. Our volunteers have been there with us every step of the way. We are forever grateful to them for their commitment to VCSU.”

DeMuth to speak on neutrino experiment at museum Thursday

David DeMuth, Jr., Ph.D., professor of mathematics and director of undergraduate research, will speak on the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Barnes County Museum on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), an international mega-science project, is being built in Lead, S.D., 4,850 feet below the surface at the Sanford Underground Research Laboratory. There a neutrino detector will record particles from a beam originating at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill. Scientists will use the neutrino research to study big questions including the origin of matter, unification of forces and black hole formation.

DeMuth will address the building of DUNE, including its engineering design and timeline, and research possibilities for North Dakota undergraduate students.

The lecture, open to the public free of charge, is part of season 19 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series.

Carlson presents at IR conference

Gregory Carlson, Ph.D., director for institutional research and assessment, delivered a session presentation at the 2016 Association for Institutional Research in the Upper Midwest (AIRUM) annual conference in Bloomington, Minn., Nov. 2–4.

Titled “Open Education Resource (OER) Implementation at Valley City State University: Using Multiple Measures to Evaluate the Success of a Mission-Driven Initiative,” the presentation was based on Carlson’s work on OER evaluation at VCSU with Julee Russell and Jodi Shorma.

With the theme “Institutional Effectiveness in Action,” the conference showcased discussions about meaningful ways that institutional effectiveness can inform and support campus initiatives.

In addition to presenting, Carlson attended workshops on enrollment forecasting and project management. He also attended sessions evaluating the impact of institutional and student characteristics upon dropout, implementing electronic rubrics and reporting for learning outcomes assessment, applying Item Response Theory to survey development and evaluation, and factors impacting student satisfaction with university experiences. Additionally, he convened conference sessions focusing upon student retention initiatives and managing resources in small institutional research offices.

Carlson has completed the first year of his three-year term on the AIRUM Steering Committee, which organizes and plans the annual conferences.
