Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. Buchholz and Heath to Lead V-500 Scholarship Drive Erica Buchholz, controller in the VCSU Business Office, was re-elected president of the V-500 Scholarship Organization at its regular meeting on Aug. 16. The V-500 scholarship program began in 1972 and has grown to allocate in excess of $265,000 in scholarship support to VCSU students annually. Typically, scholarships range from $1,500 to $2,500 annually. Buchholz is joined by Kelli Heath, VCSU media communications specialist, who was re-elected vice president of the V-500 organization. Buchholz and Heath are joined by Angie Williams, VCSU professor in the Kinesiology and Human Performance Department. The board is rounded out by 10 other members from the greater Valley City community. The goal for the current drive is $90,000. Staffing for the board includes Loree Morehouse, Kim Hesch and Larry Robinson, in the Foundation Office. The V-500 program provides considerable flexibility for anyone interested in becoming a member. For VCSU employees, payroll deduction is convenient and a popular way to become a member of our team and support this important scholarship program. Anyone interested should contact Erica, Kelli, Angie, or the VCSU Foundation Office. "We are very thankful and appreciative of Erica, Kelli and Angie for stepping forth to direct the V-500 scholarship drive for 2017-2018," said Larry Robinson, executive director for university advancement. "They are clearly giving of their time, talent and treasure. When you see them on campus, please thank them for their efforts. Our V-500 bylaws call for faculty representation on our Board of Directors. Should any member of our faculty be interested in joining, please stop by the VCSU Foundation Office. You will find the experience refreshing and rewarding." Century Club begins membership drive The VCSU Century Club has officially kicked off their 2017-2018 membership campaign. The Century Club is responsible for providing financial support via memberships for student athletes. The goal for this year's drive is $130,000. The president of the Century Club for 2017-2018 is Tyler Van Bruggen, a local agent for Farmers Union Insurance, Valley City. According to Van Bruggen, "Valley City State University and its student-athletes enrich our community," Van Bruggen said. "I invite all of you to support the Century Club and come out and experience one of our many sporting events throughout the year." Like the V-500 Scholarship program, membership in the Century Club provides flexibility in membership levels and payroll deduction is available through the VCSU Foundation Office. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Century Club should either contact Deb Feuerherm at the Fieldhouse, the Foundation Office, or other Century Club board members. In addition to Feuerherm, and VCSU professors Jamie Wirth and Dave Bass, there are 12 other Century Club members from the greater Valley City community. The V-500 and Century Club scholarship programs compliment one another to provide important scholarship support for our student-athletes.
Century Club Kickoff event is Aug. 29 The VCSU Century Club is hosting its annual Fall Kickoff event Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Valley City Town & Country Club. The public is invited to enjoy a free meal and hear from VCSU coaches and student-athletes about the upcoming athletic season at VCSU. The social starts at 5 p.m.; burgers and brats will be served at 6 p.m.; coaches and athletes will speak at 6:30 p.m. “We are excited about the new year in VCSU athletics," VCSU Athletic Director Jill DeVries said. "Your generous support helps us demonstrate to our student-athletes the shared responsibility to engage, educate and elevate the Viking experience at VCSU. We appreciate the support and look forward to seeing you at Graichen Gym, Shelly Ellig Field, and the W. E. Osmon Fieldhouse this year.” VCSU students spend summer in Alaska VCSU students Jolene Woodbury and Taylor Balkan spent their summer break working as Impressionists for Old Harbor Native Corporation at The Grande Denali Lodge at Denali National Park, Alaska. Impressionists welcome visitors to the properties and provide services similar to a professional concierge. Woodbury was a student in a theatre class in fall 2016 and also acted in Almost, Maine in spring 2017. Jenni Lou Russi, former VCSU Director for Theatre, retains her connections in the Denali area after starting the Alaska Cabin Nite Dinner Theatre there in 1987, and recommended Woodbury for the unique position.
Faculty Excellence Award correction President Mason shared the recipients of the Faculty Excellence Awards in her presentation to staff and faculty on Aug. 17 and inadvertently left out special appointment/adjunct winner, Laurel Westby. Congratulations again to Laurel on this remarkable award – we are proud to call her a Viking!
