Bass named NAIA Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year

Dave Bass, assistant professor in the VCSU School of Education and Graduate Studies, has been named the 2017 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Wally Schwartz Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year.

Bass has served as VCSU's Faculty Athletics Representative for more than 20 years, acting as a liaison between the athletic department and the institution as well as handling eligibility and academic questions. Bass will be presented with the national award at the NAIA Convention next April in Kansas City.

"Dave is dedicated to the success of the student-athletes at VCSU and in the NSAA," said VCSU athletic director Jill DeVries. "He is without a doubt the 'go-to guy' for eligibility questions and compliance at Valley City State and many other NAIA institutions."

Bass is also the NSAA eligibility chair and the FAR liaison to the NSAA Board of Directors. He has served 10 years as the eligibility chair for three difference conferences. At the national level, Dave has served four years on the NAIA Council of FARs, and five years on the Learning Disability Advisory Committee. Prior to taking over as VCSU's FAR Bass coached Viking track and field and cross country from 1981-91.

Public open house Sept. 21 to discuss city growth plans

A public open house will be held Thursday, Sept. 21 from 5:30-8 p.m. (formal presentation at 6:30 p.m.) at the Eagles Club in Valley City to discuss growth of Valley City.

The City of Valley City and NDDOT have partnered with Stantec Consulting Services to complete a Comprehensive and Transportation Plan for the City of Valley City that will serve as a guide for the city’s growth through the Year 2045.

The meeting includes both an open house and formal presentation where you can learn more about the planning process and share your input. Your input is important as no decisions have been made as part of the planning process at this time. Please come and learn more about the plan and share your ideas on Valley City’s growth and development through the Year 2045.

They are also encouraging everyone to take their online community survey and submit comments at www.valleycity2045.com.

Pizza Ranch event Sept. 27 to support Out of the Darkness

Students in Psychology 370: Abnormal Psychology are helping with the Valley City Out of the Darkness walk as part of a service-learning project. One group will be busing tables at Pizza Ranch from 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, and would love to see you!

Pizza Ranch will donate 10 percent of your bill to the Out of the Darkness walk if you bring in the flyer pictured here that evening. You can bring this image on your phone or grab a paper flyer from our students who will be outside the cafeteria Sept. 25-29 from 11a.m. - 1 p.m.

Out of the Darkness walk Sept. 30

The Valley City Out of the Darkness walk, an event for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will take place at Lokken Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 3-5 p.m.

Our goal is to provide a time of healing and support for anyone affected by suicide and for those who are interested in suicide prevention and awareness. Funds raised from this event come back to Valley City and North Dakota in the form of educational and prevention materials, training and support services.

If you are interested in attending the event, please register on our website www.afsp.org/valleycity. If you would like to fundraise for the event, you can create your own page after registering and send your link out via email, social media, etc. so your friends and family can support you.

The event chairs would like to thank VCSU for being an official sponsor of the Valley City walk. Now we need members of the VCSU community to come out on Sept. 30 and support the cause!

If you have any questions, contact Katie Woehl.
