Software Engineering students compete

Curt Hill, CSSE professor, took a team of four Software Engineering students to the annual DigiKey Collegiate Computing Competition (DKC3) Oct. 20, in Thief River Falls, Minn.

The students, Dalton Beighley, Brett Hejtmanek, Matt Lien and Nick Wax represented VCSU among a field of twenty-two teams from regional schools. Despite zero experience in this or any other programming competition the team did very well, placing sixth in the short programming and fifth in the long programming problems. VCSU was perhaps the smallest institution represented, which also included North Dakota State University, University of North Dakota, Minot State, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Dakota State and many others.

DigiKey treated the teams very well, supplying motel rooms, breakfast, lunch and gift bag to all. VCSU graduate Derek Jacobs led the facilities tour for the VCSU team as well.

Costume night at men's basketball

The Valley City State University athletic department has dubbed the men’s basketball game on Halloween night as “Costume Night.” VCSU will be hosting “Bleacher Trick or Treat” during the game for kids in grades 6 and younger. Everyone is encouraged to come in their Halloween costumes. There will be cash prizes for the best costumes in the VCSU student section. The game starts at 7 p.m. as VCSU hosts Peru State.

Heises honored for volunteer work

Becky, building services for the President's House Guest Inn, and Daryl Heise, carpenter/maintenance, were honored for their volunteer work in Valley City.

Valley City Beautification Committee member Bobby Koepplin and Mayor Dave Carlsrud presented the Heises with a framed print, "For the Next Hundred Years" to honor their work, citing the numerous work sessions they've attended, providing their time, pickukp, trailer, tools, wheel barrow, etc., to help make Valley City an even more beautiful place.

Barnes County Historical Society lecture Nov. 2

The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 19 Presents: Bill Grommesh, “PATH ND, Foster Parenting and You” 7 p.m., Nov. 2, at the Barnes County Museum.

With nearly 1,500 children in foster care in ND and 350 of those children needing adoptive homes, there is a definite need for more foster homes in ND. Foster parents are substitute parents for children when their parents are unable and the foster home serves to protect and nurture children while their parents take steps to get their life back on track. Respite homes are also needed which allows foster children a place to go occasionally. When there isn’t a foster home available after a child is removed from their home, they are moved to another county and made to transfer schools and daycares. Ideally keeping a child in their classroom or community with their friends is less traumatic as they face many other disruptions in their life.

This informational session is aimed for anyone interested in learning about foster care or becoming a foster parent. Bill will discuss the steps involved in becoming a licensed foster parent and is looking to meet with any interested party who has been curious about becoming a foster parent. PATH licenses adults who are at least 21 years of age including single people, individuals or couples identifying as LGBTQ, retired people, unmarried couples, and married couples.

PATH ND, a private nonprofit child and family services agency, began operations in North Dakota in 1994. Since then, PATH has grown from providing treatment-based foster care to providing more in-home and community-based services and supports like parent-to-parent mentoring and transitioning to independent living to children and families in North Dakota. Grommesh serves PATH as a recruitment and licensing coordinator.

All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public.

Meyers acquires commission

Nicholaus Meyers, D.M.A., director of bands at VCSU, has been selected as the North Dakota Music Teachers Association 2019 Commissioned Composer. The premiere will take place July 2019 in Grand Forks, N.D.

Viking sports update

Football
Saturday: Valley City State 66, Presentation College 27
VCSU’s football team earned its first road victory of the season Saturday, putting up a season-high 66 points in a victory over Presentation College. The Vikings (4-5, 3-4 NSAA) close out the season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at rival University of Jamestown.

Volleyball
Friday: VCSU 3, Waldorf 1
Saturday: Viterbo 3, VCSU 0
Viking Volleyball went 1-1 on a road trip this past weekend, defeating Waldorf University and falling to No. 2-ranked Viterbo University. The Vikings are now 13-11 overall and 7-6 in conference play. VCSU hosts Mayville State on Wednesday in the final home match of the season.

Women’s Basketball
Saturday: VCSU 87, College of Saint Mary 73
The Viking women’s basketball team opened the season with an 87-73 victory against College of Saint Mary on Saturday. VCSU travels to Florida for two games at the Warner Classic, Nov. 3-4.

Men’s Basketball
Tuesday: Minot State 86, VCSU 76
VCSU’s men’s basketball team fell to NCAA Division II school Minot State on Tuesday, 86-76. The Vikings are now 1-1. They host Peru State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
