Faculty/staff annual giving exceeds 60% participation

We now have over 60 percent participation—thank you all! You can pledge for a certain dollar amount or set up a recurring amount per paycheck. Whatever works for you will work for VCSU!

Jamie Paurus, golf coach and assistant professor of computer systems and software engineering, describes his giving: “I give to ‘Friends of CSSE’—Computer Systems and Software Engineering—to award scholarships to the outstanding students majoring in our emerging and innovative fields of study. And as a coach at VCSU, I believe it only right to give back to our athletic programs as the athletes give so much to VCSU.”

Please contact the Foundation Office at 845-7203 or email Maggie Heinle for more information on ways to give.

‘Devil We Know’ film to be shown at museum Tuesday night

“The Devil We Know,” an award-winning documentary about one of the largest class-action lawsuits in the history of environmental law, will be shown at the Barnes County Museum in Valley City on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.

The film looks at the clash between West Virginia residents and the DuPont Corp. over claims that the corporation had been contaminating the air and water supply with chemicals related to its manufacture of Teflon.

Discussion and information regarding area water issues will follow the film showing. The event, open to the public free of charge, is sponsored by “What in the World Is Going On?” group.

Maguire named ‘Student Employee of the Month’

Emma Maguire has been named “Student Employee of the Month” for October 2018. Serving as a student assistant in the human resources and payroll department, her supervisors shared, “Emma Maguire is a valuable member of the human resources and payroll department. She is friendly, reliable, and always willing to help out where needed! In addition, she is involved in many departments and organizations on campus which makes her an integral asset to the institution.”

Congratulations, Emma!

VCSU singers perform at Minnesota NATS Auditions

Four select VCSU music majors participated in the Minnesota NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Auditions held at St. John’s University in St. Joseph, Minn., Nov. 2-3. With over 300 competing singers, the two-day adjudicated event featured the top college singers from Minnesota along with contingents from VCSU and NDSU.

Along with Farren Rowan, piano, representing VCSU were singers William Egan, Mikey Meester, Joseph Munowenyu, and Rochelle Van Bruggen, all students of Robin Allebach, Opera Ensemble director and voice instructor.

Solo Song Symposium held Nov. 10

The VCSU Music Department hosted its seventh annual Solo Song Symposium on Saturday, Nov. 10. The symposium featured a day of masterclasses and workshops for select high school singers, who received coaching in vocal technique, diction, stage etiquette and performance practices, culminating in the opportunity to perform in a showcase recital.

The vocalists were high school juniors and seniors drawn from North Dakota and South Dakota. Along with pianist Michelle Kallod, this year’s selected soloists were Alan Anderson, West Fargo, N.D.; Madison Bartholomay, Enderlin, N.D.; BreAnne Benson, West Fargo; Brooke Crabtree, Jefferson, S.D.; Haley Dalgliesh, Valley City; Elizabeth Gazeley, Valley City; Ian Olson, Horace, N.D.; Julia Rash, Valley City; and Cara Van Bruggen, Marion, N.D.

The recital also featured William Egan, baritone, Enderlin; Abigail Ingstad, soprano, Valley City; Mikey Meester, tenor, Valley City; Joseph Munowenyu, bass baritone, Valley City; and Rochelle Van Bruggen, soprano, Marion—all former Solo Song participants who are now VCSU vocal music majors.

The event was facilitated and led by Robin Allebach, Opera Ensemble director and voice instructor, and Christopher Redfearn, D.A., associate professor and chair of the music department.

Drenth painting in ‘Small Wonders’ exhibit in Annapolis
