Exercise science students, Milner attend strength/conditioning clinic

Six exercise science students, Lauren Amirault, Journey Gontjes, Devin Poitra, Quinton Vonesh, Gage Wherley and Kallie Zander, acccompanied by Sarah Milner, assistant professor in the Kinesiology and Human Perfomance Department, attended the North Dakota State National Strength and Conditioning Clinic in Bismarck on Feb. 16.

Presenters included registered dietitians, physical therapists, and high school and collegiate strength and conditioning coaches. The clinic was attended by strength and conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, personal trainers, coaches, and physical education teachers.

Featured topics included “Physical Preparation for Male and Female Ice Hockey Players” by Anthony Morando, “Sports Nutrition: Peri-Workout Nutrition and Cramping Solutions” by Joseph Champa, “Training the Middle School/High School Student/Athlete from the Ground Up: What’s Most Important?” with Bill Nelson, and “Special Considerations for Training the Overhead Athlete” by Brandon Dirk. The conference also included hands-on sessions at Sanford POWER.

VCSU students, faculty attend and present at Fisheries Society meeting

Fifteen fisheries and wildlife science and one environmental science student, along with professors Casey Williams and Andre Delorme, attended the joint meeting of the Dakota and Minnesota chapters of the American Fisheries Society in Fargo, N.D., Feb 25-27. The VCSU student group represented the largest number of students from any North Dakota, South Dakota, or Minnesota college or university. All told, attendees included 300 professionals and students.

Williams presented results of an ongoing N.D. stream fish study titled “The State of North Dakota’s Fishes: Results of a Four-Year Study.” He received the “Best Professional Presentation” award for his efforts.

Four students also presented the results of their VCSU-supported S.O.A.R projects:

  • Ellen Anderson presented her research titled “Percent Occurrence of Historical Sample Size of Select Stream Fishes of North Dakota” (oral presentation).
  • Ethan Rasset presented his research titled “Feeding Habits of Smallmouth Bass in the Sheyenne River” (oral presentation).
  • Cooper Folmer presented his research titled “Evaluation of Age and Growth Rates of Smallmouth Bass, Pre and Post Construction of East End Devils Lake Outlet” (poster presentation).
  • Jayme Menard presented her research titled “Evaluation of Mussel Growth Rate in the Sheyenne River Post Devils Lake Outlet” (poster presentation).

Milner attends Reflexive Performance Reset clinic

Sarah Milner, assistant professor in the Kinesiology and Human Perfomance Department, attended a Reflexive Performance Reset (RPR) Level 1 clinic Feb. 17 in Bismarck.

This clinic provided information on what RPR is, how to do it and why it works. The RPR system includes breathing and neurological “wake-up drills” that help you move and feel better, which allows individuals to overcome compensation patterns that lead to non-contact injuries in sports. The clinic was taught by Chris Korfist, owner of Slow Guy Speed School and part owner of RPR, with Cal Dietz from the University of Minnesota and JL Holdsworth, world champion powerlifter.
