Biggers receives ‘Difference Maker’ award

Keith Biggers, facilities services, received the “Difference Maker” award on April 10. He was nominated by members of the athletics staff.

His nomination read, “Keith has done a fantastic job this year in field prep and facility prep for all of our athletic events. He has spent countless hours moving snow this winter and spring in order for our student-athletes to practice and compete. Keith has helped to mentor our work-study students, and adapts well to the many changes and personalities in the athletic department.”

Krapu to speak about travels in Morocco Thursday

Gary Krapu of Valley City will present “Morocco: Impressions Gained during Travels from the Sahara to the Sea” at the Barnes County Museum on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m.

Krapu — along with his wife, Madeline, and son Chris — spent two weeks in January 2019 touring Morocco by bus accompanied by a guide and 17 other tourists. His presentation will focus on the many unique features of the country.

A retired research biologist, Krapu continues to do crane research with the United States Geological Survey. He holds a doctorate in animal ecology from Iowa State University.

The presentation, part of season 20 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series, is open to the public free of charge.

CTS to host Campus Connection 9.2 webinar April 24

Core Technologies Services (CTS) staff of the North Dakota University System will present a “Lunch and Learn” webinar covering Campus Connection 9.2 for NDUS personnel who access Campus Connection.

A session on Wednesday, April 24 from noon to 1 p.m. will cover “General Navigation, Favorites, Homepages.” This session will demonstrate the look and feel of Campus Connection for all users showing how 9.2 will provide a more customizable experience for navigation. We will also demonstrate some of the new features like Homepages and Tiles. There will also be appearances from some of our trusty friends, like “My Favorites.”

City plans available for review at open house April 25

The City of Valley City is developing a Comprehensive and Transportation Plan to serve as a guide for growth and development through 2045, to provide a program for transportation and infrastructure improvements needed to accommodate future growth, and to serve as a policy framework to enhance the quality of life for Valley City's residents and business owners.

An open house to review work on the plan and provide feedback will be held Thursday, April 25, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. at the Hi-Liner Activity Center in Valley City. Two review stations will be available — one to review the 2045 Future Land Use Map, policies, land use categories and implementation strategies, and another to review the proposed 2045 Transportation Plan and implementation strategies.

CTS to host higher ed user-group conference Oct. 23-24

Core Technology Services will host ND HEUG 2019, the user-group conference for the North Dakota University System, on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 23-24, at the National Energy Center of Excellence at Bismarck State College.

The two-day conference will explore topics of interest for professionals utilizing the Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Student Information System, HRMS, FIN, and Perceptive Content applications, along with other topics.

LeTellier presents on new N.D. arts standards

John LeTellier, Jr., assistant professor of music education recently presented on the new North Dakota State Arts Standards at the North Dakota Music Educators Association Conference held March 21-23 in Bismarck.

LeTellier worked as one of two state-selected higher education representatives on the North Dakota Arts Content Standards Writing Team in designing the new state standards over the course of eight months. The standards went through several rounds of both public- and peer-review.

At the conference, LeTellier and three other committee members presented the new framework as well as resource information to assist state music educators in utilizing the new standards in their classrooms.

VanHorn presents at Central States communication conference

Shannon VanHorn, Ph.D., professor in the School of Education and Graduate Studies, presented research and information in several panels at Central States Communication Association (CSCA) conference in Omaha, Neb., April 4-6.

As part of the CSCA Past President Task Force on Economic Issues in the Academy, VanHorn and colleagues from Western Kentucky University, Ohio University, Texas A&M, University of Northern Iowa, Ohio Northern University and the National Communication Association presented their findings and suggestions in a panel titled “Economic Issues in Higher Education: Creating Dialogue and Building Advocacy Efforts.”
Along with colleagues from throughout North Dakota, she participated in two North Dakota Showcase panels, “Enhancing Student Reading and Writing In and Outside of the Classroom” and “Innovative Ways to Meet Unique Needs.”

VanHorn also participated in the following panels: “Ensuring Regular and Substantive Interaction in Online Communication Courses: An Opportunity for Dialogue,” “Dialogue that Examines and Addresses the Impact of Male Privilege on Women Academics,” “Addressing Changes Due to Budget Issues: An Opportunity for Dialogue,” and “Panic Within the Patriarch: Managing Civil Discourse in the Classroom When It Has Been Impacted by Political Dialogue Outside the Classroom.”

Additionally, she sat in on a panel where VCSU alumnus and NDSU doctoral student Kyle Vareberg presented a research paper he and VanHorn wrote: “’Wow, Really? At Least Tell Me Face-to-face!’: A Study of Relationship Termination and Technology Dependency.” Finally, she dialogued with members of the Basic Course Interest Group to gather information and suggestions for the National Communication Association’s Teaching and Learning open-access website.

The Valley City State softball team posted a 3-1 record this weekend during a four-game series against Viterbo University. The No. 8-ranked Vikings are now 34-3 overall this season and lead the North Star with a 14-2 conference record.

Baseball
Sunday: VCSU 5, Viterbo 0; VCSU 8, Viterbo 6
The Viking baseball team swept a doubleheader against Viterbo University on Sunday in Wisconsin. The Vikings are now 11-14 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

Golf
The VCSU men’s golf team is seventh of 11 teams after Day 1 of the Iowa Central Spring Invite. VCSU’s Collin Hoss and Jared Lentz are tied for ninth place individually after both shot a 4-over 75 on Sunday. The VCSU women did not have enough golfers participate to qualify a team score, but Taren Braunberger sits in 12th place individually after shooting a 94 on Sunday. Day 2 out of the 36-hole tournament is Monday.
