Support the Faculty/Staff Giving Campaign

“I give because I care about student success. There is a lot of pressure and costs associated with college. If the students succeed, then we succeed! Giving to V-500 and Century Club (and other funds) really does make a difference. Students come to me and personally thank me for the scholarship dollars they receive.” — Wesley Wintch, Vice President for Business Affairs

Colleagues, Wesley’s testimonial above reminds me that we all play such an important role in helping our students succeed. I am thankful for your efforts and also grateful for your participation in our faculty and staff giving campaign!

There are several options for contributing, and the amount and focus of your gift is entirely up to you. V-500 academic scholarships, Century Club athletic scholarships, Friends of Business, Friends of the Library, or Friends of Music are just a few of the options. Won’t you consider joining Wesley and me and supporting our students in their pursuit of their collegiate and career goals?

Please contact the Foundation Office for more information or to complete a donation form. Thank you for your consideration! — President Alan LaFave

Eat pizza and support the fight against suicide

Come out to Pizza Ranch on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 5-7:30 p.m. and they will donate 10% of your bill (and any tips you leave!) to our Valley City Out of the Darkness Walk!

Students in Psychology 370: Abnormal Psychology will be there to bus your tables as they complete part of a service learning project focused on understanding suicide and mental health.

Be sure to show them the attached Community Impact image (print it out or show them this article on your phone) when you order!

Archuleta to speak on ‘Choosing to Participate’ at museum Thursday

Nick Archuleta, VCSU alumnus and president of North Dakota United, will present “Choosing to Participate: Social Justice Is Not a Spectator Sport” on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Barnes County Museum, 315 Central Avenue North, in Valley City.

Archuleta will speak on how individuals can step up within their community to promote social justice and combat racism.

His talk will be supported by posters, provided by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, that explore the history and impact of racism and prejudice in our country, and encourage viewers to consider the consequences of everyday choices and to make a difference in their own communities.

A graduate of Valley City High School, Archuleta holds a bachelor’s degree from Valley City State University and a master’s degree from the University of North Dakota. He has served as president of North Dakota United since the 2013 merger of the North Dakota Education Association and North Dakota Public Employees Association.

Sponsored by the community organization “What In The World Is Going On?,” the presentation kicks off season 21 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Valley City community Out of the Darkness Walk to be held Sunday

Registration begins at 2:30 p.m., the opening ceremony starts at 3 p.m. and the event will end with a healing ceremony at 4 p.m. Please come to honor those you know — and to support our many community members — who have been affected by suicide.

A huge thank you to our Sexuality and Gender Alliance Club, Human Services & Psychology Club, and students in Kelsie Carter’s Psychology 370: Abnormal Psychology course for all of the help they are providing in making this event happen and to VCSU for sponsoring the event again this year!

To register, or for more information, please check out the Valley City Walk website, www.afsp.org/valleycity, or contact Katie Woehl.

VanHorn, Reule publish in communication journal

Shannon VanHorn, Ph.D., and Jonna Reule, Ph.D. — along with colleagues from Delaware Community College, Williston State College, Gonzaga University, and Sinclair Community College — published an article in volume 38 of “Communication Research Trends.” Their extended article, “Exploring Active Learning Theories, Practices, and Contexts,” provides context to the history of active learning, definitions, examples, assessments, and implications of active learning for online modalities. VanHorn and Reule teach in the VCSU Communication Arts Department.
