Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. President‘s Column: Community collaboration continues VCSU is thankful for the collaboration and support we enjoy from the community, county and public schools, both in Valley City and the region. I’m looking out the south window of my office while writing this column, and I see sunny skies; with 56-degree temperatures and no wind, it’s a seemingly picture-perfect day. Yet, just this morning, city crews were busily installing flood panels on the Viking Drive bridge west of the main campus. Many have indicated that the return to the nice temperatures is actually having a negative corollary impact on the rising lake and river levels, thus affecting our community and campus. We are all incredibly thankful for the proactive work of the city in installing these flood panels, and it serves as an important reminder of the outstanding preventative measures that have been taken in our community to help mitigate potential flood damage to residences, businesses and the campus facilities. The closing of Viking Drive, which will run through at least November 10, is a required piece of the flood protection plan. Nonetheless, it requires flexibility, cooperation and innovation on the part of the campus and community. The VCSU campus is effectively divided, east to west, by the Sheyenne River. Programs, classes and events that occur in the buildings to the west — the Gaukler Family Wellness Center and the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse — will continue. Some classes have been temporarily relocated to other parts of campus while students adjust their pedestrian and motor vehicle travel patterns to accommodate the necessary and important flood protection. We thank the campus community for quickly adjusting to this change and the community of Valley City for being so efficient in installing the temporary panels which complete the flood protection at the Viking Bridge location. It certainly provides a sense of relief and confidence that measures can be taken to help avoid catastrophic loss in these types of situations. It is our hope that the concern for rising river and lake waters will be resolved positively and that we have favorable spring conditions to mitigate future flooding issues. Please know that we — VCSU faculty, staff and students — stand ready to assist in the event we are called upon to help with these efforts. Thank you to Valley City workers and employees who are overseeing the protection of our city to the best of their abilities! Go Vikings! Support the Faculty/Staff Giving Campaign Among the many giving options available for faculty and staff are the Annual Fund, the Century Club and V-500 Scholarships. Annual Fund Gifts made to the Annual/Phone-a-thon Fund support Alumni Association initiatives, including “The Bulletin,” alumni socials, reunion events and alumni award programs. By supporting this fund, you are investing in the future of VCSU. Donations help increase the university’s giving participation rate, an important and impactful number that helps strengthen the university’s national rankings and recognition. Century Club Contributions made through the VCSU Century Club, the athletic booster organization, provide athletic scholarships. Each year numerous athletic scholarships are provided to student athletes attending VCSU. V-500 Scholarships The V-500 program funds academic scholarships to support VCSU’s vision of attracting and retaining talented individuals who advance quality learning opportunities and economic growth through technology and innovation. Of course, there are other options for your contributions, and the amount and focus of your gift is entirely up to you. Won’t you consider joining me and supporting our students in their pursuit of their collegiate and career goals? Please contact the Foundation Office for more information or to complete a donation form. Thank you for your consideration! — President Alan LaFave ‘Shatter the Silence’ walk tonight “Shatter the Silence,” a walk to raise awareness for domestic abuse and relationship violence, will take place tonight, Monday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. The campus and Valley City community are invited to attend the event, which will begin at the VCSU Student Center. Last year’s event brought together more than 70 students, faculty, staff and community members in a walk through campus and part of Valley City in an educational and supportive crusade. Art students and faculty participate in Plains Art Museum print exchange VCSU art students Jenna Cameron, Zander Dale and Zoey Koch, along with Angela Mircsov, assistant professor of art, have work in the “Print Portfolio Exchange: Interpretation of Dreams” exhibition that runs through Nov. 30 in the Xcel Energy Gallery at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo. Each artist is required to create an edition of 25 impressions and will receive a portfolio of 25 prints through the exchange. In addition to VCSU, participating universities include North Dakota State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Concordia College, Minot State University and the University of Manitoba. The exchange is inspired by Salvador Dali’s prints and an upcoming exhibition at the Plains Art Museum titled, “Salvador Dali: Stairway to Heaven” opening on Dec. 19. More info about the exhibitions can be found at plainsart.org/exhibitions. (Pictured is a serigraph print titled “Keep” by Zander Dale.)
Fairfield receives ‘Difference Maker’ award Rhonda Fairfield, executive assistant to the president, was recently presented with the “Difference Maker” award. She was nominated by the Marketing/Communications Office. Her nomination read, “Rhonda recently served as co-chair of the Inauguration Committee. She spent countless hours helping organize the events and handling a myriad of details. Although she was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness, everything was so well planned that the events came off with very few hiccups. Over the years, Rhonda has played an integral role on campus as the president’s executive assistant. She volunteers her skills and time as needed in a variety of roles and is appreciative of her colleagues. Rhonda makes a difference at VCSU, and we are thankful for her efforts.” Congratulations, Rhonda! Da Vinha authors book chapter on U.S. multilateralism Luis da Vinha, associate professor of political Science, authored a chapter titled “Uma Relação Complexa: O Multilateralismo e a Política Externa Norte-Americana no Século XXI” (“A Complex Relationship: Multilateralism and US Foreign Policy in the Twenty-first Century”) in the recent book “O Multilateralismo: Conceitos e Práticas no Século XXI” published by Coimbra University Press. Da Vinha’s chapter analyzes America’s role in building the postwar liberal order, namely in designing and building a broad set of international institutions. However, the United States has always maintained a complex relationship with these same institutions. The chapter emphasizes how America’s unique domestic political context constrains its international behavior, particularly since the end of the Cold War era. Da Vinha argues that the current structural shift in the international system presents a major challenge to US policy-makers since it no longer holds a hegemonic status.
