Nelson to speak on community philanthropy at museum Thursday night

Andrea Nelson, director of the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation, will present “A Key to a Thriving Community: Building Philanthropy and Supporting Our Nonprofit Sector” on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Barnes County Museum.

Founded in 2013 as a qualified endowment fund, the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation receives, manages and distributes gifts made to the foundation for charitable purposes. The foundation connect donors with causes they care about and serve as a catalyst for community change. It is dedicated to the improvement and long-term viability of the Sheyenne River Valley area, including Barnes, Griggs and Ransom counties.

Open to the public free of charge, the presentation is part of season 21 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series.

VCSU Music hosts 8th Annual Solo Song Symposium

The Valley City State University Music Department hosted the 8th Annual Solo Song Symposium on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Conceived and directed by Robin Allebach, the day of solo singing for selected high school singers featured the opportunity to perform in a recital setting with master classes in vocal technique, diction, stage etiquette and performance practices, which culminated in a spotlight recital.

Drawn from North Dakota and Minnesota, this year’s selected high school soloists were Alan Anderson (West Fargo, N.D.), Jackson Arends (Jamestown), Anna Beachamp (Fargo), BreAnne Benson (West Fargo), Haley Dalgliesh (Valley City), Tanner Douville (Twin Valley, Minn.), Elizabeth Gazeley (Valley City), Abigail Holter (McCanna), Karli Jirava (Ogema, Minn.), Konnor Stordalen (Bismarck), and Pearl Whitehurst (Fargo). Sarah Larsen, VCSU staff pianist was accompanist, with teaching assistance by Rochelle Van Bruggen, VCSU music major.

The day also highlighted William Egan, baritone (Enderlin, N.D.); Abigail Ingstad, soprano (Valley City); Mikey Meester, tenor (Valley City); and Joseph Munowenyu, bass baritone (Valley City) — all Solo Song Symposium alumni who are now vocal music majors at VCSU.

Bremer presents at MSUM

Abigail Bremer, assistant professor in the School of Education and Graduate Studies, facilitated a workshop as an invited speaker for the Cultural Competency Certificate Series at Minnesota State University Moorhead on Oct. 24-25. The session, “The Role of Power in Systems of Inequity,” helped faculty members explore how systems of oppression exist and are perpetuated in American society today.

Russi performs with Theatre B

Jenni Lou Russi, associate professor and chair of the Communication Arts Department, played Joan in “Small Mouth Sounds” with Theatre B at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo Nov. 8-10.

A sensory deprivation experience, the performance was fully staged with a focus on communication through sound while audience members wore blindfolds. Produced as a meditation retreat, the project was a collaboration between Theatre B, the Plains Art Museum and Consensus Council.
