The VCSU Hotline! online newsletter is published every week during the school year. Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. Music production and recording program featured on industry blog VCSU’s music production and recording program is featured on the web blog of studio equipment producer Audient in an article titled “ASP4816 Chosen For Valley City State University Recording Suite.” The piece includes a description of the studio that VCSU music students use, along with several photos and quotes from students and John LeTellier, assistant professor of music and designer of the production/recording suite, about the music technology program.
VCSU offers students multiple opportunities to study music production and recording, ranging from a major to a minor to a certificate program. Students learn how to record, mix and produce music in a professional studio environment, which include Audient analog and AVID digital mixing consoles, Neumann mics, Maschine sequencers/production hardware and Pro Tools DAW software.
The Audient blog article can be found online at audient.com/2020/01/20/vcsu. Zacher earns recognition for SOAR grant research at history conference VCSU alumna Sarah Zacher ’18 earned the Ernest Teagarden Award (Professional Category) for her paper “Uncovering the Silent Voices of the Past: A History of the Fort Totten Boarding School,” presented at the Dakota History Conference in Sioux Falls, S.D., in April 2019. Her paper focused on the history of the boarding school and the impact it had on the Native Americans who attended the school.
Zacher received a VCSU SOAR (Student Opportunities for Academic Research) grant in spring 2018 to work on her research paper with faculty member Steven King. The SOAR grant requires the recipient to present the funded research at a conference; because Zacher graduated in December 2018, the semester before the conference, she competed in the professional category with graduate students and historians.
Zacher’s award marked the fifth year in a row that a VCSU student has received recognition for presenting a paper at the Dakota History Conference. VCSU hosts 28th Annual Emerging Leaders Competition The Valley City State University Emerging Leaders Competition Committee, along with the VCSU DECA chapter, hosted the 28th Annual Emerging Leaders Competition on the VCSU campus on Wednesday, January 29.
The event brought in 335 high school students and 22 advisers from 19 schools. Included in the event were 10 tests, 23 individual and team role-play participation events, and a quiz bowl competition. The committee was able to offer two tuition waivers and gave over 45 awards to area students. Fargo Davies High School captured the overall school traveling award (pictured).
Exciting additions to the event this year, coordinated by the VCSU Enrollment Services Office, were a trivia competition and academic activities. Several department volunteers helped with these activities.
The Science Department provided science exploration activities, the Art Department furnished a Doodles and Focus activity, and Rhonda Fairfield, Learning to Live instructor, challenged students with problem-solving activities. The VCSU planetarium offered astronomy shows throughout the day.
Another addition this year was provided by Tammy Katuin, M.B.A., assistant professor in the VCSU Business Department, with help from student intern Charlotte Huschka, who provided personalized welcome messages to all the schools and students in Vangstad Auditorium and created an interactive table at the Student Center that participants and advisers enjoyed.
North Dakota Career and Technology state supervisors Kevin Reisenauer, Jessica DeVaal and Tracy Becker presented positive messages and served as coordinators for the day. Megan Zarbano, VCSU alumna and the 2018 North American Retailers Hardware Association’s Young Retailer of the Year, presented the keynote address.
Judges for the events were 30 volunteers from local businesses and VCSU faculty and staff. Wesley Wintch, VCSU vice president for business affairs, served as emcee for the opening and award ceremonies. Pete Smithhisler, vice president for student affairs, gave the official VCSU welcome with his motivational message about teamwork and leadership with the “We All Row” motto.
The VCSU Emerging Leaders Committee includes Amber Aberle, Ed.D., assistant professor; Jeff Moser, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the Business Department; LaDonna Anderson, administrative assistant; Tammy Katuin; Oscar Suniga, admissions counselor; and Erin Heide, admissions counselor.
