VCSU at NDSU club members volunteer at food bank On Feb. 18, members of the VCSU at NDSU Elementary Education Club volunteered at the Great Plains Food Bank. The students’ volunteer time was spent packing bags of food for the Backpack Program for local schools. Every Friday, these bags of food go home with students in the area who may not have food for the weekend. By the end of the evening, members packed over 1,000 bags for our local students. Without volunteers, this program would not be possible. In addition to volunteer opportunities, the VCSU at NDSU Elementary Education Club invites guest speakers, discusses current issues and trends, and takes part in other activities that celebrate the teaching profession. Advisers for the Elementary Education Club are Kaley Mari and Yvonne Cannon, both assistant professors in the VCSU School of Education and Graduate Studies. Pictured volunteering at the food bank are (l to r) Mari, Cannon, and students Bethany Richter, Haley Ashpole, Grace Hofstad, Mallory Mosloski, Sadie Myrvik, Madi Lura and Madison Ressemann. Baughman presents at psychology teaching conference Kiersten Baughman, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, presented a talk with a colleague at the Southeastern Teaching of Psychology (SETOP) Conference in Atlanta, Ga., on Feb. 21, 2020. The title of the talk was “Envisioning the Future and Addressing Intimate Partner Violence: Developing Special Topics Courses that Engage and Enlighten.” Baughman discussed the nature of the special topics course on Intimate Partner Violence she has created based on her research expertise in this area, providing helpful tips for attendees to consider in developing their own courses at their home institutions. Baughman’s topics course on Intimate Partner Violence will be offered again at VCSU this summer online and is open to all majors. The SETOP Conference brought together educators of psychology at all levels of their careers to share effective classroom innovations. The director of the American Psychological Association gave a closing address about the current state of psychology in the U.S., requesting information from the attendees about where to go next. Much of the dialogue surrounded the importance of underscoring the many different avenues students can pursue with a degree in psychology and increasing awareness of the numerous roles that psychologists fill in the field.
