Today's Top 10 Stories | #1 | | Verizon: Online Viewers Expect TV-Quality Video | | | According to a new consumer survey from Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS), online video viewers expect TV-like quality with their content every time they watch, no matter the screen. More than 85% of those surveyed told VDMS that it was important to get a TV-like quality experience for every video, on every screen they use. Why This Matters: The survey, based on June interviews with more than a 1,000 American online adults, found that the average time spent viewing video on any device fell by 77% when video quality dropped, with a third of viewers abandoning the video altogether half the time they watched content on mobile devices. 3 Takes: B&C | Advanced Television | Media Post |
| #2 | | Broadcasters Seek $86.4 Billion as Reverse Auction Closes | | | The FCC announced the end of the first stage of the incentive auction after 52 rounds, setting the clearing cost for 126 MHz of spectrum at $86.4 billion, an amount that wireless providers may balk at, triggering a second round with a reduced clearing target. Why This Matters: Wireless service providers will have to pony up $86.4 billion during the forward auction, which will start in a few days. If that figure isn't met, the FCC will reduce the amount of spectrum it will free up for wireless use, resuming bidding with TV broadcasters in the reverse auction where it ended during the previous stage. 5 Takes: B&C | Bloomberg | Deadline | Reuters | Fierce Wireless |

| THE CHATTER | | Regulatory profiteer Dish Network is faithfully executing its apparent campaign to use carriage impasses to induce the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to tip its retransmission consent rules in Dishs favor. Dish has become the market leader in creating impasses, harnessing the resulting consumer frustration, and through its proxy the American Television Alliance, driving its customers to the Commission to demand a regulatory fix.
