During the latter years of Mercedes’ dominance with Lewis Hamilton, I suggested here that if you gave Max Verstappen the best car, he’d dominate Formula 1 too. And it came to pass.
So it was rather cheeky of Toto Wolff to say, after Verstappen’s record-setting win streak at Monza, that “those numbers, it is for Wikipedia and nobody reads that anyway”. Especially when he’s not exactly shy of reminding us of Mercedes’ amazing feat of eight successive constructors’ titles not that long ago…
Like all the greats, Verstappen says publicly that numbers don’t matter to him, while in private I’m sure he’s buzzing off them. His aim every weekend is not only to win races, or set records, it’s to absolutely dominate – hence his obsession with setting fastest laps.
Good luck with trying to destabilize him! By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
