A 35-year-old man was shot several times after exchanging gunfire with a Bexar County deputy Friday afternoon, Sheriff Javier Salazar said. The man, whom Salazar described as "dangerous" and a "career criminal," was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, he said. The man's name has not been released. Salazar said the deputy, a seven-year veteran with the Sheriff's Office, attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a silver vehicle just before 4 p.m. on the city's far West Side. When the deputy tried to pull the car over, the man bailed and fled on foot towards a wooded area, before eventually running into the Blazing Star RV Resort in the 1100 block of West Loop 1604 near West Military Drive, Salazar said. Salazar said the suspect pulled a shotgun from a heavy coat he was wearing and began firing slug rounds, going "toe-to-toe" with the deputy. "The (deputy) fired several times with his service weapon (and) the suspect was shot several times in the lower extremities and the upper body," Salazar said. Video obtained by KSAT.com and taken by a technician working in the area shows the deputy approaching the man with his gun drawn, before the technician leaps into the back of his work truck. Offscreen, gunfire can then be heard. While the deputy was not injured in the shooting, Salazar said some of the slug rounds struck a nearby pickup truck and an RV. "(The man) has a lengthy history, several convictions, several other charges pending indictment," Salazar said. Salazar said the scene is still active and investigators expect to process it for a couple of hours.
