ON CAMERA: A shocking phone video circulating on social media shows a St. Charles Parish deputy sheriff shove and punch a woman in the face during a confrontation in Luling. It’s fueled accusations of excessive force from online commenters and from the family of the woman. It also prompted the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday to release video recorded by the deputy’s body-worn camera, and to allege that she refused orders from deputies to back away from the arrest of her brother and resisted her own arrest.
NIGHT CAP: During the Who’s set at the 2022 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, guitarist Pete Townshend joked, “I’d really love to play ‘When the Saints Go Marching In.’ But we haven’t got time.” He found time later that night, however, when he turned up as a guest performer at Preservation Hall and sang the standard while strumming a 1928 banjo with the house band. Among those watching were Jason Isbell and Dave Grohl.
EVEN WORSE: Kyshun Webster was named director of New Orleans’ juvenile jail in October 2018. By all accounts, he took over a place racked by scandal, violence and high turnover by both management and staff, much of it going back years. Now that he’s quit the job, a look back at his tenure shows he was often absent from work and, according to employees, might have made a troubled lockup even worse.
