Just when Ericsson and Nokia thought they had the RAN market to themselves after the Americas and most of Europe have frozen out Huawei, an entire coterie of vendors and telecoms operators who are members of an orgnisation called the O-RAN Aliance have other ideas.
The first three articles in this edition of the WIREFREEZ 5G market roundup are all about the transformation of the 5G wireless communications space into sn Open RAN (O-RAN) environment, where the RAN hardware is diaggregated from the controlling software running on commodity hardware such as Intel's x86 platform.
NEC is one vendor that has declared its hand in this area and we present an exclusive in-depth interview with a senior executive who explains where the market is heading.
Meanwhile, US operator DISH Network, a long time satellite player but a new entrant to the US 5G space, is building an O-RAN 5G network frtom scratch and has just announced an alliance with Intel.
And over at Vodafone, one of the world's largest wireless operators, with Huawei being phased out, the company has announced that it is going with an O-RAN strategy to replace the Huawei equipment at 2600 base stations.
