As intense as this election cycle has been, I think it’s important to take a step back and realize how privileged we are to live in a country where we are free to vote and make our voices heard. When I was in college, I went on a study abroad to London. One day, my friends and I went to Portobello Road, where all the incredible antique shops are, and a gorgeous necklace caught my eye. The man who owned the antique shop told me it was owned by a suffragette based on the colors and design of the piece. I was halfway convinced he was lying, but couldn’t pass it up if it were true, so I spent more than I could afford buying the piece, and I ate ramen the rest of the trip. After doing some research on it, I discovered his assertion was right — it has been a sentimental piece for me ever since. Every time I wear it, I remember that women weren’t allowed to vote until relatively recently in our country’s history. The woman who wore that in Great Britain, as well as her sisters over here in the U.S., fought hard, often paying a great personal price to ensure I had the right to vote and contribute to our great democracy. I try and remember that, especially when I feel overwhelmed by election season. If you’re registered to vote, you still have time to drop off your ballot or vote in person. Find out more about voting and tracking your ballot here, and you can find out where to drop off your ballot or vote in person here. Tell me: What are your predictions for the election tonight? I’d love to see if any of you are dead on. 🗳️ As usual, any story having to do with Utah elections will have a ballot box emoji next to it. Also on our minds: Salt Lake City has some of the worst drivers in the nation, Republicans and Democrats need to talk things out and socializing in the workplace has its benefits. |
