Ursula von der Leyen’s decision to re-run for the EU Commission presidency has prompted some positive reactions in several EU capitals, but her quest to secure enough support from governments may prove to be a little more challenging.

A European People’s Party (EPP) source told Euractiv that “there can be no room for liberal or partisan dogmatism in the next institution cycle”.

Euractiv’s newsroom and its network analysed von der Leyen’s challenges ahead of the EU elections in June, both from a policy point of view as well as in the context of the complex politics in EU capitals.

INTERVIEW: Sweden is ready to talk with Hungary, which is still holding Stockholm’s NATO accession, but its membership of the alliance is “not a matter of negotiation”, Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson told Euractiv’s Aurélie Pugnet.

“The message I received from my Hungarian colleague is that the Hungarian parliament will ratify us as soon as possible,” Jonson said.

Meanwhile, Angelo di Mambro analysed data from the International Grain Council (IGC), suggesting that grain and oilseed exports from Ukraine have returned to the same levels as in March 2023 thanks to the UN’s Black Sea Grain Initiative. 

Moreover, the European Commission opened formal proceedings against TikTok under the Digital Services Act on Monday, due to possible breaches in several areas, including child protection.

Last but not least, the European Left party (EL) wants to “abolish” the EU’s current fiscal rules to facilitate greater social and environmental spending, according to a draft electoral manifesto seen by Euractiv.
