The power of building expertise |
As a manager, there are many ways in which you can exert your authority, but none are as positive as wielding “expert power.”
At its core, expert power is grounded in your knowledge, skills, and expertise in a specific area. It’s a great asset to have and being able to channel it properly brings undeniable advantages to you and your organization.
- Building expert power, you provide yourself with a base from which you can manage people more confidently. Your expertise will establish you as a knowledgeable mentor and resource, making your team more likely to seek your guidance and respect your opinion. This can help to create an environment of open communication, improving collaboration, and productivity.
- Expertise facilitates effective decision-making. As a manager with a deep knowledge of your field, you can make informed decisions more swiftly and confidently. This not only saves time but also inspires confidence in your team, knowing that their leader's decisions are grounded in expertise.
- Expert power can help cement you as a subject matter expert within the eyes of leadership. This recognition can lead to increased opportunities for professional growth, advancement, and expanded influence within your organization.
As much as building expert power is about embracing continuous learning, it’s also about being generous in sharing your knowledge with others. Great managers like yourself want their people to thrive as much as you do.
