Hi Voornaam

Wireless semiconductor kingpin Qualcomm has used its Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital 2020 virtual event to unveil its Snapdragon 8-series mobile range, including the flagship Snapdragon 888 5G mobile platform for premium mobile devices. Qualcomm has become the clear market leader for mobile 5G chipsets and we have two reports from the summit.

Worldwide mobile industry group. the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has named the big three RAN equipment suppliers Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia, among 23 initial founding partners and members of its newly established GSA FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) Forum.

The British Government says it will pump £1.6 million (A$2.9 million) into Japanese firm NEC to support a project to develop an open radio access network for 5G. In an announcement on Monday, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said the investment was part of its commitment to try and diversify.

Fujitsu has announced that its O-RAN (Open RAN) compatible 5G Radio Unit was selected by KDDI Corporation for the construction of virtualised base stations for 5G commercial services in Japan, with planned delivery in the second half of FY2021.

Germany has rejected the US push to ban Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei technologies from its 5G rollout, with the Asia Times reporting on Monday that the company would be allowed to build part of the network.

Australia's second largest mobile operator Singtel Optus will go ahead with plans to sell 70% of its "passive" towers, which are estimated to be worth $2 billion, to help pay for its rollout of 5G infrastructure.

Any time Australia's NBN Co is taking a hammering over the abysmal speeds on the fibre network which it is building at a cost of $57 billion - and still counting - there is a bid to make things look better: the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig.

As always, there is a plethora of more information in the list of stories below and a couple of orders of magnitude more on wirefreez.com!
